Roadmap
- 100% Difficulty: 5/10
- Time to 100%: ~ 90 hours if idle grinding the grindy achievements, ~ 75 hours if actively grinding them
- Number of playthroughs: 1x Challenge Mode for the 32 Platinum Medals and 1,000 deaths, Versus Mode for the remaining achievements
- No missable or online achievements
This achievement list can be done in any order. Here’s my recommended order:
- Start the game and you will obtain the Clearing the backlog achievement upon reaching the Main Menu
- Obtain all 32 Platinum Medals and die 1,000 times in Challenge Mode, which will net you all the achievements related to Challenge Mode
- Obtain the 3 quick achievements in Versus Mode (Come at me, bro!, Master of their Domain, Mine, All Mine!)
- Go for the grindy achievements in Versus Mode (Ice Breaker, Stabby stabby stab, Developer X is pleased, NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!!)
Note: Challenge Mode and Versus Mode are separate modes and, with the exception of the Ice Breaker achievement, stats aren’t shared between those 2 modes. Additionally, each achievement can only be done in its specified mode.
While the overall list is almost the same on all those platforms, there are some notable differences related to certain achievements:
- The Clearing the backlog achievement in the Steam version (obtained for just starting the game) is replaced with the Ghostbuster trophy/achievement in the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One versions (obtained for beating your Ghost)
- The Developer X is pleased achievement’s requirement is significantly reduced from 32,768 total points in the Steam version to 4,096 total points in the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One versions
- The Stabby stabby stab achievement’s requirement is significantly reduced from 10,000 hearts in the Steam version to 3,000 hearts in the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One versions
- The NERD and NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!! achievements’ requirements are significantly reduced from 1,000 rounds and 10,000 rounds respectively in the Steam version to 100 rounds and 1,000 rounds respectively in the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One versions
As you may have deduced, the list is considerably quicker to complete on PS3, PS4, and Xbox One – hence the ~ 20-hour time estimates you tend to see for those versions. Besides those differences, the game is identical in terms of achievements/trophies, gameplay, and content across all those platforms. As such, this guide can be used for the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One versions as well.
Controls, Settings & Grinding
STARWHAL has full controller support and can be played with a PlayStation controller. The DualShock 4 works well with the game; however, keep in mind that the game displays Xbox buttons and not PlayStation ones.
The controls are very simple as there are only three of them. Here they are along with their respective buttons:
Note: Taunting is only needed for the Come at me, bro! achievement. You won’t need to use it at all besides that.
Before starting your stabbing extravaganza, I highly recommend going to Main Menu -> Options -> General and adjusting the settings there as follows:
- Allow Pause toggles whether players can pause the game while playing the game in Versus Mode.
- Allow Slo-mo toggles whether the game slows down when any Starwhal’s heart is about to be stabbed in Versus Mode. Disabling this setting makes the overall game – especially the grinding – quicker. When you consider how much grinding you need to do for the achievement list, it all adds up over time. Note that the time to completion was estimated with this setting being disabled, so it takes even longer if you enable it.
- Allow Camera Shake only matters if you plan to actively grind, as it can be a bit of a bother if you leave it on.
- Enable XInput only matters if you’re having problems using a Xbox controller, as XInput is related to Xbox controllers.
Note: Go to Main Menu -> Options -> Visual and adjust the Ghost Visibility setting if your Starwhal’s Ghost distracts you during Challenge Mode.
Idle Grinding:
Although STARWHAL‘s achievement list has a couple of very grindy achievements, you can thankfully “idle grind” them by letting the game run and do the grinding for you on its own (without you actively playing it). Here’s how to set up your controller to let you do so if you don’t have a turbo controller:
- Make sure your controller is plugged, then go to your Steam Library where STARWHAL is, right-click on STARWHAL, and select Properties -> Controller -> Controller Configurator
- Click on “Enable Steam Input”, then click on “Edit Layout” under “Current Button Layout”
- Locate the X/A button, then click on the gear next to it and then select “Settings” in the small menu that pops up
- Enable the “Hold to Repeat (Turbo)” setting. You may also change the repeat rate (which determines how often the button is pressed in milliseconds) if you wish or just leave it on the default value of 100.
- Before starting a grind, make sure to hold your corresponding Accelerate button with something heavy like a book in order for the game to keep immediately restarting the match after each round ends, and rubberband your left analog stick to the left for your Starwhal to turn in circles all the time and stab / be stabbed by the AI Starwhal while grinding the Stabby stabby stab, Developer X is pleased, and NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!! achievements.
That’s it! You’re ready to idle grind the Stabby stabby stab, Developer X is pleased, and NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!! achievements. Please refer to their respective sections in the guide for more information on each grind.
Active Grinding:
While you can actively grind the very grindy achievements, I don’t recommend doing so in the Steam version since It doesn’t save you a ton of time – given how much time it takes to obtain these achievements, it’s not worth it due to the amount of time you’d need to be actively grinding them.
That said, actively grinding these achievements isn’t too bad in the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One versions since their requirements were substantially shortened, and it takes around 15 hours to actively grind them there. I’ve provided a method to actively grind these achievements in their respective sections in the guide in case you still wish to do so.
Challenge Mode: How It Works + Grinding The 1,000 Deaths
Challenge Mode features 32 levels that are divided into 2 categories: 16 Obstacle levels and 16 Target levels.
- Obstacle levels require you to reach the goal while avoiding obstacles and traps such as terrain and lava
- Target levels require you to collect all the hearts while avoiding obstacles and traps such as terrain and lava
You need to obtain all 32 Platinum Medals for the Too Easy achievement and die 1,000 times for the Die One Thousand Deaths achievement. Challenge Mode is the only hard part of the achievement list, and the challenge lies more in getting used to the delicate controls than the levels themselves, which aren’t long at all as the longest Platinum Medal is only 25 seconds.
Orange lava adds 5 seconds to your time while yellow lava instantly kills you. Even a single touch of the orange lava can void your Platinum Medal run, so you must avoid both kinds of lava wherever applicable to obtain the Platinum Medals in those levels.
Once you obtain all 32 Platinum Medals, you will likely have the Die One Thousand Deaths achievement left in Challenge Mode. Here’s how you can easily (idle) grind your remaining deaths:
- From the Main Menu, go to Challenges -> Target -> Hard and pick the Turtle level
- Your Starwhal will automatically (and slowly) fall into the lava. You can speed this up by setting up the “Idle Grinding” method (without rubberbanding your controller’s left analog stick), which will let you quickly fall into the yellow lava and automatically restart the level right away.
- Let the game run till you get the achievement!
Here’s a video that shows this method:
Challenge Mode: All 32 Platinum Medals
OBSTACLE:
Easy 1: EZ EZ
- Platinum Medal: 4 seconds
- A straightforward run to the finish. Just be mindful of the entrance to the goal.
Easy 2: Full Throttle
- Platinum Medal: 13 seconds
- Grinding your Starwhal along a couple of the walls on your way to the goal allows you to maintain your speed.
Easy 3: Escalation
- Platinum Medal: 7 seconds
- Watch out for the circular obstacle in the middle when veering to the left.
Easy 4: Spin Cycle
- Platinum Medal: 7 seconds
- Stay in the middle and don’t get caught in any of the air passages.
Easy 5: Slippin’ Slide
- Platinum Medal: 12 seconds
- It’s a bit tricky to get through them, but you absolutely need to avoid the 3 orange lava balls.
Medium 1: Stream Sailor
- Platinum Medal: 18 seconds
- When going down, be sure to stick to the left side in the first part and the right side in the second part to avoid getting propelled to the other side.
Medium 2: Danger Zone
- Platinum Medal: 15 seconds
- When going up, you need to skip a few turns by going straight as much as possible.
Medium 3: Sludge Sewer
- Platinum Medal: 12 seconds
- You need to be as fast as possible when the lava goes down to make it to the goal in time.
Medium 4: Torching Tunnel
- Platinum Medal: 19 seconds
- You need to hide in the small alcove in the right and hover there for a few seconds while avoiding the small pool of lava until the big wall of lava goes
Medium 5: Hustlin
- Platinum Medal: 25 seconds
- Use the circular terrain to gain a little speed in the first two parts, which guarantees that you will break the ice. Take the next part slowly and make sure to fall through the middle without touching any of the orange lava balls, then try not to touch the bumpers more than once to make it to the goal in time.
Medium 6: Lava Loop
- Platinum Medal: 18 seconds
- You need to take the small openings created by the moving orange lava balls (while avoiding them) in the lower section of each of the first 2 parts.
Hard 1: Hot Hallway
- Platinum Medal: 11 seconds
- It’s better to stay near the top until you encounter the upper platform in order to easily avoid the orange lava balls.
Hard 2: Ice and Fire
- Platinum Medal: 17 seconds
- Grind your Starwhal on the lower wall past the 2 rotating orange lava obstacles then go between the 2 circular pieces of terrain and stay in the middle to gain a little time.
Hard 3: Careful Climb
- Platinum Medal: 15 seconds
- Delicate handling is required here, but try not to touch the bumpers.
Hard 4: Gauntlet
- Platinum Medal: 12 seconds
- Try to stay in the middle when going past the moving orange lava balls in order to make it through the small opening with lava on either side.
Hard 5: Centrifuge
- Platinum Medal: 23 seconds
- Move your Starwhal’s tusk a little up in order to avoid the 2 pools of orange lava in the beginning.
TARGET:
Easy 1: Crossroads
- Platinum Medal: 6 seconds
- Start with the heart on the top and then collect the rest from left to right (or vice versa).
Easy 2: Pitfall
- Platinum Medal: 7 seconds
- A straightforward run to the finish. Just try to avoid touching the lower wall when collecting the last heart so as not to lose time.
Easy 3: Wave
- Platinum Medal: 17 seconds
- Start with collecting the upper hearts from right to left, which leaves you ample time to collect the last 2 hearts (left then right).
Easy 4: Liftoff
- Platinum Medal: 8 seconds
- This one can be a little tricky, as you need to fly through the middle without touching any of the walls on either side in order to collect all the hearts in time.
Easy 5: Sharp
- Platinum Medal: 10 seconds
- You need to avoid as many of the bumps as possible. Try to fly up straight through the middle at the start to gain a little time.
Easy 6: Big Bouncy Stairs
- Platinum Medal: 8 seconds
- You absolutely need to avoid the bumpers so as to have enough time to collect all the hearts.
Medium 1: Rebound
- Platinum Medal: 17 seconds
- Collect the hearts in a clockwise manner. You have ample time here, so don’t rush a lot.
Medium 2: So Many
- Platinum Medal: 20 seconds
- The hearts guide the way for you. You don’t have to be very precise, and the given time is fairly lenient here.
Medium 3: Windmill
- Platinum Medal: 23 seconds
- The order makes a lot of difference here. Collect the hearts as follows: first windmill one in front of you, then the ones on the left, then the ones on the top, then the remaining windmill ones and the one on the right.
Medium 4: Gyroscope
- Platinum Medal: 25 seconds
- You have more than enough time to collect all the hearts here, so don’t worry if you miss one or two.
Medium 5: Tegrat
- Platinum Medal: 18 seconds
- This one can be a little tricky, as you need to hit the bumpers so that they take you up/down as close to the next heart as possible.
Hard 1: Scorch
- Platinum Medal: 18 seconds
- Collect the 2 hearts together and let the bumper take you down to the next section, then collect the remaining hearts in a counter-clockwise manner while leaving the circling heart till the end.
Hard 2: Turtle
- Platinum Medal: 14 seconds
- The only tricky part is collecting the 2 lower hearts on each side. You need to slow down in time to collect them without touching the green lava.
Hard 3: Rename It Later
- Platinum Medal: 20 seconds
- A fairly straightforward level. You can take your time here, just be sure to slow down after collecting the upper hearts so you can quickly get to the last heart on the right.
Hard 4: Easy Does It
- Platinum Medal: 10 seconds
- You need to be careful, yet quick here. Collect the hearts in a counter-clockwise manner starting from the upper left one.
Hard 5: Factory
- Platinum Medal: 20 seconds
- Avoid the bumpers and escalating platforms. Start by collecting the upper middle heart, then the lower middle one, then the right ones and finally the left ones.
Here’s a video walkthrough of all 32 Platinum Medals:
Versus Mode: The 3 Quick Achievements
- Come at me, bro!, which requires you to taunt 25 times in a single match;
- Master of their Domain, which requires you to hold a Zone for 45 consecutive seconds;
- Mine, All Mine!, which requires you to win a Versus Heart Throb match being the sole holder of the Heart
Come at me, bro!: Taunt 25 times in a single match
This achievement is very simple. Load up any Versus match with any settings while adding a human player. Once in the match, just keep pressing the Taunt button (S for PC, X for Xbox controllers, Square for PlayStation controllers) until you get the achievement. It should be noted that the counter goes up every time the taunt animation plays next to your Starwhal, not every time the Taunt button is pressed.
Master of their Domain: Hold a Zone for 45 consecutive seconds
From the Main Menu, select Versus then Zones and adjust the settings as follows:
- Score: 50
- Time: Infinity
- Versus Type: Free for All
- Rounds: None
Add a human player, then start the match on any level (Asteroid X: Classic works best thanks to its simplicity) and hold the zone for 45 consecutive seconds by touching the circle in the center of the zone with your Starwhal’s tusk and staying still. The achievement will pop immediately afterwards.
Here’s a video showing this method:
Mine, All Mine!: Win a Versus Heart Throb match being the sole holder of the Heart
From the Main Menu, select Versus then Heart Throb and adjust the settings as follows:
- Score: 10
- Time: Infinity
- Versus Type: Free for All
- Rounds: None
Add a human player, then start the match on any level (Asteroid X: Classic works best thanks to its simplicity) and grab/hold the heart until the match ends. The achievement will pop immediately afterwards.
Here’s a video showing this method:
That’s it for the 3 quick achievements! Are you ready to go stabby stabby stab for hours on end? Because that’s what the last part is about!
Versus Mode: The Grindy Grindy Grind
- Ice Breaker, which requires you to shatter 1000 blocks of Ice;
- Stabby stabby stab, which requires you to stab 10,000 hearts in Classic mode;
- Developer X is pleased, which requires you to accumulate 32,768 total points in Score Attack (i.e. stab 32,768 hearts);
- NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!!, which requires you to play 10,000 rounds of Versus
Ice Breaker: Shatter 1000 blocks of Ice
I recommend actively grinding this achievement, as it only takes around 2 hours to do it that way. From the Main Menu, select Versus then Classic and adjust the settings as follows:
- Lives: 1
- Time: Infinity
- Versus Type: Free for All
- Rounds: None
Add a human player, then start the match on Forsaken: Glacial Pass and break all 16 blocks of ice in the level with your Starwhal’s tusk/body while Player 2 chills in the bottom of the level, then kill Player 2 to end the match. Restart the match and repeat as many times as needed. If you have finished Challenge Mode before going for this achievement then you will already have broken many blocks of ice and will need around 55-60 matches to get this achievement in that case (compared to 63 matches if you haven’t broken a single block of ice).
Stabby stabby stab: Stab 10,000 hearts in Classic mode
This achievement takes a few dozen hours to get and can be tackled in 2 different ways.
Idle Grinding:
Make sure you have idle grinding set up as in the “Idle Grinding” section of the guide, then from the Main Menu, select Versus then Classic and adjust the settings as follows:
- Lives: It’s better to have this setting at a low value since you will need to play 10,000 Versus rounds for the NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!! achievement – your aim is to get that achievement towards the end of either Classic or Score Attack grind (depending on which one you start last) and avoid grinding any more than is necessary
- Time: Infinity
- Versus Type: Team
- Rounds: None
Add 3 AI Starwhal opponents and double check that they’re in the same team (they all need to be the same color), then start the match on any level (Asteroid X: Classic works best thanks to its simplicity). Going for the idle grinding method means that the game will keep running and do the grinding for you while your Starwhal and the AI Starwhals stab each other, so you can just do something else in the meantime.
Here’s a video showing this method:
Active Grinding:
From the Main Menu, select Versus then Classic and adjust the settings as follows:
- Lives: It’s better to have this setting at a low value since you will need to play 10,000 Versus rounds for the NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!! achievement – your aim is to get that achievement towards the end of either Classic or Score Attack grind (depending on which one you start last) and avoid grinding any more than is necessary
- Time: It doesn’t matter as each round takes less than a minute with this method
- Versus Type: Free for All
- Rounds: None
Add a human player, then start the match on any level (Asteroid X: Classic works best thanks to its simplicity) and turn Player 2 on its back, then repeatedly stab its heart with your main Starwhal until the match ends. Rinse and repeat as many times as needed.
Here’s a video showing this method:
Notes:
- You will get the Stabby stab achievement for stabbing 1,000 hearts along the way
- All stabs count towards this achievement – be it you stabbing the AI or the AI stabbing you
Developer X is pleased: Accumulate 32,768 total points in Score Attack
This achievement takes a few dozen hours to get and can be tackled in 2 different ways.
Idle Grinding:
Make sure you have idle grinding set up as in the “Idle Grinding” section of the guide, then from the Main Menu, select Versus then Score Attack and adjust the settings as follows:
- Score: It’s better to have this setting at a low value since you will need to play 10,000 Versus rounds for the NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!! achievement – your aim is to get that achievement towards the end of either Classic or Score Attack grind (depending on which one you start last) and avoid grinding any more than is necessary
- Time: Infinity
- Versus Type: Team

- You will get the Why2K? achievement for accumulating 2,000 points along the way
- All stabs count towards this achievement – be it you stabbing the AI or the AI stabbing you
NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRD!!!!!!!: Play 10,000 rounds of Versus
You will have most likely obtained this achievement by the time you finish the Classic and Score Attack grinds. If not, however, then simply play your remaining rounds using any of the aforementioned grinding methods until you get this achievement.
