Walkthrough with maps for Kobold Slayer.
Character Creation and Town Stuff
Attribute Points – Unlike in Wizardry, a lot of checks in this game are based on a direct “compare your attack attribute (after item modifiers) with the enemy defense attribute” comparison, and there are no attribute maximums, so it can benefit you a lot to start with an unusually high main stat and rely on the +1/level attribute raises to qualify for advanced classes. Having a Strength of 30 is way better than a Strength of 17.
Bishop – Only requires an Intelligence and Piety of 11 each. Doesn’t meaningfully advance slower than any other class, so there’s not much reason to ever take a Mage or Priest instead of a Bishop.
Starting Attribute Points – Determined on a random roll of 5-9, with a 5% chance of +10, and another 5% chance of a further +10. It’s generally quick enough to reroll and stats are important enough in this game that I wouldn’t start with characters with less than 15 attribute points, while ones with 25-29 only come out every 400 rolls, so it’s probably not worth the effort.
Party Size – You get 4 members in your active party, but you’re allowed to put more characters in your party and take them into the dungeon. This can be used for swap-in characters if your main team starts to die, for a Thief or Bishop who isn’t in your active party, or for spare Priests or Bishops to spam healing spells.
Save Scumming – You can always save before leveling up, identifying items, or resurrecting dead characters in order to assure a good outcome. Leveling up has a 90% chance of increasing all of your stats – by 1 for normal stats, and by 1-6 for HP/MP, with a 20% chance of +10 and a 10% chance of another +10. If stats are not increased, they will be decreased by 1. Items are a random selection from the ones listed for that level of the dungeon, while resurrection works 5/6 of the time.
Dungeon Encounters – These happen 1/3 of the time you open doors, and not otherwise, except in the wandering monster zones on floors 5, 6, and 8. Winning a fight results in a treasure box 1/2 of the time. As a result, you should avoid opening doors if you don’t want to get into fights, and if you do want to get into fights, you can simply keep opening and walking through the same door on repeat.
Infinite Money – You can create characters without any limit, overwriting previous characters in the same slot, in order to get 500 gold each time. This is a very efficient way of making money early on, and a short time doing this should provide enough money to start with an Iron Staff for any mages, priests, and bishops, an Iron Shield for any fighters and priests, and a Jewel Ring. (While some of the other items are very good, I don’t want to encourage anyone to generate 30 characters just for an early Quality Short Sword.)
The Inn – The only thing you gain by spending money and not sleeping in the stables is your dignity. Any rest fully restores MP, which means you can easily go and magically heal yourself one step into the dungeon, and then return to town and rest in the stables again to fully refill for 0 gold.
