Welcome to the SunnySide Progression Guide! Are you new to the game and unsure of when you unlock certain items or abilities? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. As I played the game, I encountered advice like “you get x later” and “don’t get y because it’s given to you.” This left me confused and wondering when and how I could obtain these things mentioned in-game. That’s why I’ve created this guide to help you navigate your progression in SunnySide. Let’s get started!
Intro
I am updating it as i play the game and continue through the questlines but i thought maybe it can help people out already…
Hello there! When i started SunnySide i was a bit lost on what i could and should do when, so i googled a lot (and still sometimes was a bit lost!). I Thought i would complie all i found to make it easier for people coming after me!
*(that i have unlocked so far at least, roughly in the order that i unlocked them)
This should help you focus more on the aspects of the game that you want to progress in and want to see more of in the game! I for example put the “Homesteading” Quest (building the tea house) off for way to long because clay farming is just way to annoying compared to farming wood etc.
If i had known what i would unlock doing it (the game hints at it but not much) i would have finished the quest way earlier! So here hoping you dont do the mistakes i did!
But i did my best to not write anything too specific, just what you need to do and what you get for it. Plus some mild recommendations at time
I hope you have lots of fun playing SunnySide and build a great farm!
Day 1 (Fixed Quests)
Welcome to your farm! After you arrived at the plot of land you bought there arent many things to do actually. Here are all the tasks of the day, i’d encourage you to do them in this order but you can change it up!
Some notes:
- Eating with Gabriel takes 1 ingame hour out of your day. (you cant skip it either). It also teleports you back to your farm (to the ruin at the river to be exact)
- As the Tech Shop (Tech Hero) closes at 19 (7pm) and is quite far away (takes about 1h just running straight at it, no detours) i’d advise you to go there first and do everything else after but the choice is yourse!
- (Quest) Getting Started: Get tools from Shed
The Shed is on the other end of where you’re standing (where Gabriel left you and your tent). There is a cardboard box inside of the Shed. Open it and pick up the tools, follow the tutorial for equipping them. Take a quick look around it you want to - (Quest) The Kindness of Strangers: Get phone fixed at Tech Hero
You start at the road, it goes along side one of the sides of your property (there are kind of 3 paths connecting the plot and the road). Run down the road towards the bridge and continue until you reach the village, Tech Hero is the second house on the left side on the main road. Run up to the shop and a cutscene plays. The crack in your phone is now gone (horray!)
You now have to wait for Gabes text for lunch - (Quest) The Kindness of Strangers: Having lunch with Gabriel will fill your stomach (so you can do more hard labour) and net you 2 potatoes for planting. Your very fist crops!
- Freetime! You can run around clearing weeds with your Nata, start foraging or do whatever else you want to do, like looking around some more.
My recommendation is just clearing the space around your shed with the Nata enough so that you can plant around 15 plants (small plot size), then go down towards the village. On your way out of your property you might have noticed some tree stumps, they have mushrooms you can pick up. Before you reach the village, take a right turn just after Gabes Ranch and you will find a whole path full of berry bushes to its sides. Get as many as you can, as a way to replenish your energy this week (Foraging points respawn every week. Your energy regenerates faster the fuller your stomach is!)
If you want you can also plant the potatoes you go, but i would advise you to wait just one day because if you do, they might get eaten by wildlife creeping into your (still wild) territory! - Go to sleep when ever you’re ready (the game clocks you out around 23:45, sometimes a bit earlier (which is a bug)
Day 2
While you should play at your own pace, i recommend to rush a bit today to unlock the most basic stuff fast. So i will outlike a schedule below, you can do whatever you want before 9 and after 5pm.
Some notes:
- Tech Hero opens at 10, you need 1h running to get there
- Hoshi Woodworks and Ishikawa Blacksmith close at 17 (5pm)
- Even thought it sounds like you can go to Obeng directly the way Hiro talks, you actually have to place the Building Station before the cutscene with him can play out! This is why i build up the recommended schedule below
- (Quest) The Kindness of Strangers:
As Kat has promised, she greets you in the morning with fresh strawberry seeds and new apps: SunnySeed (order new crops, they change every day) & PlantDaddy (look up plant data from all crops, not just those listed in SunnySeed). Now you have 2 crops to plant immediately and many more to come! If you havent figured out planting yesterday, she can explain some more for you. I recommend to hold of on planting the potatoes and strawberries until this evening though to keep them safe from wildlife - (Quest) The Kindness of Strangers: Talk to Hiro at Hero Tech
Follow Kats advice and at around 9 AM start making your way towards the village. Hiro will give you a laptop to make a building station once you enter his shop. Also you get a drone to fly around, take picktures etc. - (Quest) The Kindness of Strangers: Finish Build Station Blueprint
To put it up you need to get back to you farm (run back or go to the ESC-Menu and choose “Return to last Sleeping Spot” to be teleported back to your tent without loosing time. Put down the laptop in your shed and you unlock crafting and a global storage system (very neat!) Plus, with the building Station you can now plan and build on your property! We’re almost ready to plant now~ - (Quest) It Takes a Village: Talk to Phillip at Hoshi Woodworks
Now that the Building Station is set we can go to Phillip Obeng. Go back into the village, this time go deeper into it. His shop is on the last street left to the main street before the Umi Park and the Ocean. Talk to him and you’ll unlock new items to build at your farm! - (Quest) It Takes a Village: Talk to Master Ishikawa at Ishikawa Blacksmith
If you still have time (it should be 4pm at the latest!) run over to the Blacksmith and you’ll get a machete(for bambus and small trees), a pickaxe (for ore, gemstones and clay) and a new objective for tomorrow: go into the caves! For now lets go back to the farm… - (Quest) The Kindness of Strangers: Plant Potatoes
Now you have everything you need at your disposal! Free up the land from weeds with your Nata, place small crop plots and put in your potatoes and strawberries. Next you’ll want to water them and chop some bambus or wood to get sticks to place a fence (with the drone) to protect them from racoons.
- Trees and Bambus do not grow back on your farm. So be careful what and how many you chop down.
- The fence around your crops has to be the big/tall one, not the small one to ward off racoons.
- Raccoons always spawn outside of your farm and wander in. So you can make a small “ugly” fence now and replace it with a big wall around the plot later, preventing them from getting in permanently. And yes, raccoons get through the bambus even if you dont fit through the gaps 🙁
Thats about it for the second day! If you cant do the blacksmith today do it tomorrow.
I advise you to check the quests you have right now and decide what you want to focus on first from here on out!
Questlines of the “Tutorial Chapter” of the Story
From here on out you can play whatever you want, however i advise you to check out what the quests you do have right now can unlock so you can make a more informed decision what to focus on!
Some of these quests are direct follow ups, meaning you get them while progressing / finishing the previous quest. Others are very closely related, meaning that you either are bound to start the next one while doing the previous one or coming very close to the starting point for the next one. Futher details are always noted in the section of the quest in this guide!
- The Kindness of Strangers
- It Takes A village (step 3) -> unlocks A New Friend (done) -> unlocks Ancient Caves: Barren Climate
- It Takes A village (step 3) -> unlocks A New Friend (step 5) -> unlocks Making Friends
- It Takes A village (step 4) -> unlocks Homesteading
- The Kindness of Strangers

- Ancient Caves: Barren Climate
The Kindness of Strangers (continuation)
You should have this quest already, as its started right at the beginning of the game.
Following this quest you unlock the things below:
- The Crack in your Phone is gone
- get 2 potato seeds for free
- get 10 strawberry seeds for free
- get a drone to takes pictures, plan out your farm and build&move objects on your farm
- get new blueprints for stuff you can build at your farm
- get a building station to craft things at
- get a bike & stand for it at the entrance of your farm
- get a camping stove to cook simple meals for free
To start off, you’ll need to wait a few days until you get Gabes text to meet him in the City…
- Steps 1-8 are covered in the sections Day 1 & Day 2
- Step 7: Take the Bus to Higashi
After recieving the text from Gabe, just choose a time of your liking to walk up the road to the bus stop. Its the opposite way from the village and quite far away (a bit more than 1h running). Making this trip does not take time. When you are in Higashi, text Gabe and recieve a free Camping stove and a Bike (that you cant use yet, bummer!) - Step 8: Build the Bicycle Stand
Run or teleport back home and you’ll see a blueprint laid out already for the bike to stay at the entrance. You can just go up to it to build it and your bike will appear, ready to be used! You also get the vehicle app to summon it to you for your convenience! - Step 9: Attend the first Farmer’s Market on Sunday
For this one you’ll have to wait for the 1st or 3rd Sunday in the month. Either way you just need to show up at a resonable hour (19 / 7pm is too late!) and go to your tent. When you come in from the parking lot at the main street, your tent is at the left side in the back. Go to the box and put in whatever you want to sell, then go out of the menu and interact with it once more. The option “open shop” should be available now. Once you press you get a lil cut scene followed by your money.DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE THE REST OF YOUR STUFF OUT OF THE BOX IT WILL NOT BE SAVED FOR THE NEXT MARKET!!
Side note: you can seel whatever you want here, even stuff vendors dont usually bux from you. Also this is a very convinient location to buy and order services as every shop is open at the same time. You should also greet everyone you meet for relationship points!
After Step 9 this quest is now marked as completed in your journal 🙂
It Takes a Village (continuation)
You should have this quest already, as its started on the second day of the game following the schedule above
Following this quest you unlock the things below:
- the Tea House blueprint (to restore it)
- a machete for free
- a pickaxe for free
- Sparky, the robot
- an axe (you have to buy it)
- a rice cooker
- the Cookbook app
- a fishing pole for free

- Quest: A New Friend
This Quest is unlocking a ton of core gameplay stuff so i’d recommend immediately doing these tasks when they come up…
- Steps 1 & 2 are covered in the section Day 2
- Step 3: Explore the Old SunnySide Caves
Going into the mines will end your day!
To continue this quest, go into the Mines (west of the map, atop of the shrine/big tree. Once your in you will get a cut scene and get your first iron, clay etc. but it comes at a cost: no matter what time you go in, the following events will end your day immediately. You will then continue on the next day at 8AM, not 6 like usual.
- Step 4: Order and Recieve an Axe from Master Ishikawa
The iron you got has to me in your inventory still to make the axe, it cannot be in your storage. Go to the Blacksmith, open his shop and klick on “Services” to open a secondary shop window where you not only pay money but also materials in exchange for items. Pick the axe and pay, then you’re free for the day. The axe will be outside the blacksmith shop by the gate in a delivery box no matter if the shop is actually open or not. Pick it up and this step is finished. - Step 5: Visit Naka for Cooking Lessons
For this step to start you’ll have to have completed “The Kindness of Strangers” at least to Step 7 (meeting Gabe in Higashi and getting the stove). After that you’ll get a text to go have a cooking lesson. Honestly its not really a lesson and doesnt eaven teach you how to cook but hey! You get a free rice cooker and unlock the cookbook app! - Step 6: Talk to Kyale at the Wharf
A couple days later you’ll get another random text, this time its kyle and he invites you over to his bait shop. Just go there whenever its open and you got yourself a free fishing rod (dont forget to stock up on bait in his shop while you are there, his shop is quite far away from the farm)
After Step 6 this quest is now marked as completed in your journal 🙂
Homesteading
In the Quest “It Takes a Village” at Step 1 you will get a Blueprint for the Tea House, at Step 2&4 of the same quest you’ll get the pickaxe and axe, the tools you’ll need to fullfill this quest.
Following this quest you unlock the things below:
- The Tea House: a location where you can invite people to your home to hang out
- Coop blueprints (small Farm Animals): Chicken, Ducks, Quails and Rabbits.
- (to be continued)
To start off, you’ll need to get the Blueprint and Axe from the Quest “It Takes a Village”
- Step: Build the Tea House
This is straight forward: get the materials and put them in. Then the Quest continues.
You find clay in the mines, iron for nails too – just go to the piles on the floor and pick away, there is no difference between ore nodes and clay nodes, you always get random drops. Softwood comes from the normal, lighter tones trees (can be choped with machete or axe) while hardwood can be harvested from the more curved, spiraling dark trees (only harvestable with axe). - Step: Talk to Phillip at Hoshi Woodworks
After finishing the Tea House, you’ll wake up to a random Text of the Woodworker, telling you he found more of his old plans. Visit his shop and you unlock all Coops, a few for free, the rest via purchase. This is just small Farm Animals though. - Step: Build a Chicken Coop
This is straight forward: get the materials and put them in. Then the Quest continues. - Step:
(to be continued)
A New Friend
In the Quest “It Takes a Village” at Step 3 (go into the mines) you will find Sparky (or he finds you, rather!) and bring him to Hiro to be charged up. Doing this will unlock “A New Friend”
Following this quest you unlock the things below:
- Skill Tree: Sacrifice items aft the Shrine in order to unlock new stuff and abilities!
- Round-Based-Combat in the Mines
- Draw Fortunes, buy (random) Spells
- Battle Planner App: make a Spell-Deck to attack the enemies in the mines!
- Skill Tree App: look up if you can unlock a new skill/item/benefit and what it would cost you to do so, anytime anywhere
This quest sounds long but its actually done quite easily and unlocks very important features. After Hiros Text it really can (and should) be done in one day.
- Step: Wait for Hiro to Fix Sparky
Just wait a few days until you get the Text. - Step: Pick up Sparky from Tech Hero
After getting the text head over to the Tech Hero when its open, you can do this whenever you want otherwise. - Step: Explore the Caves with Sparky
After getting Sparky back he will not follow you everywhere (much to my disappointment, i wish he would only be a part of the mine not the whole game all the time.) Just go to the Mines when you have some time, there is no time-skip this time. Just follow the cave to its end and go to the next map, you’ll immediately encounter an enemy and have to flee. - Step: Talk to the Priest at Kashiwa Shrine
The Priest and Shrine are right to the side of the mine so if you still have time just head on over. If not come back later and a cutscene will play out. You get a new App and some free spells for your vist deck. Dont forget to open the pack in your inventory and slot it in, either via the “quick fill” option in the inventory or via the “Battle Planner” App - Step: Make an Offering to the Kashiwa Kami
You should do this immediately when you unlock this, as you are already in the area and possibly have things with you, that can immediately give you advantages. The Kashiwa Tree is this games Skill Tree and you’ll come here once in a while. You also get the new Skill Tree App where you can look up if you can unlock something and what it would cost you to do so, anytime anywhere - Step: Continue Exploring the Caves with Sparky
Lastly, now that you can attack back, go back into the mines, go to the second map and this quest will conclude, while the quesline itself will continue on through the Quest “Ancient Caves: Barren Climate”
After Step 6 this quest is now marked as completed in your journal 🙂
Sting Operation
You’ll get a random letter in your delivery box one day, inviting you to come to the University at the very end of the SunnySide map
Following this quest you unlock the things below:
- (to be continued)
??I havent done this quest yet??
- Step: Talk to Ryozo at the University Field Lab
Ancient Caves: Barren Climate
Finish the Quest “A New Friend” and continue on into the 2nd map in the Mines (Barren Climate).
Following this quest you unlock the things below:
- (to be continued)
??I havent done this quest yet??
- Step: Find a Power Station
(to be continued)
Making Friends
You need to have progressed the Quest “A New Friend” to Step 6 (meaning you finished Step 5 and talked to Kaida, the Priest about Sparky).
Following this quest you unlock the things below:
- Hang Out mechanic to build friendships and get to know people
- (to be continued)
To start off, you’ll need to have gotten a text from Kaida (the Priest) about getting to know people better… more importantly though, never forget:
- Step: Invite Gabe to Hang Out
Go into your contacts, select Gabriel and then use the option “Invite to Hangout”. You can pick a location and if he is available you’ll meet him immediately. He will suggest you should hang out with Ryan next time (whenever you want & he is available) - Step: Invite Ryan to Hang Out
Go into your contacts, select Ryan and then use the option “Invite to Hangout”. You can pick a location and if he is available you’ll meet him immediately. He will suggest you should hang out with him and Lucy next time (whenever you want & both are available) - Step: Invite Ryan to Hang Out Again (And Meet Lucy!)
Go into your contacts, select Ryan and then use the option “Invite to Hangout”. You can pick a location and if he is available you’ll meet them immediately. - Step: Meet everyone in SunnySide
