Intro
Formatting will be as follows :
<Caller name>
HINT 1 : <Something from in the call that I think you will help>
HINT 2 : <Usually something that I felt makes it a little more obvious than the first hint>
Solution : <The name of the entry to submit>
Personal Thoughts : <Some are reflections, some are notes, some are explanations of certain deductions.>
DAY 1
HINT 1 : “lights keep flickering off”
HINT 2 : “our Christmas Tree”
Solution : Pine Sprites
Janet
HINT 1 : “EEEK!!”
HINT 2 : *background noises*
Solution : Mice
Robin
HINT 1 : “something wet in my living room”
HINT 2 : “big tall mounds outside”
Solution : Snow Golems
Personal Thoughts : (“Frosty the Snowman was just a golemn made of snow,” is 100% the kind of pedantic, nerd trying to be edgy, buzzkill, kind of thing I could imagine people in my friend group saying. I love this.)
Chester
HINT 1 : “he’s been tracking me”
HINT 2 : “people need to know”
Solution : Forgotten Boggart
Personal Thoughts : (This is a fun reference to the obsessive nature of Bigfoot hunters)
Carl
HINT 1 : “need more”
HINT 2 : “too weak”
Solution : Sugar Wisps
Personal Thoughts : (The “too weak” is almost a bit TOO vague. But it’s referring to malnourishment from eating nothing but sugar.)
Toni
HINT 1 : “scatching noises at night”
HINT 2 : “little round pellets”
Solution : Mice
DAY 2
HINT 1 : “cold”
HINT 2 : “twenty additional family members” (!!ADDITIONAL!!)
Solution : Elves
Charlie
HINT 1 : “I’m DEAD”
HINT 2 : “please say I can change it!”
Solution : Time Wisps
Personal Thoughts : (I love the Time Wisps being the cause for things like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Carol.)
Angela
HINT 1 : “screaming like hell”
HINT 2 : *background noises*
Solution : The Mare
Holly
HINT 1 : “First Betty doesn’t show up to the PTA meeting this week”
HINT 2 : “feastfuls of feathers on neighbors’ proches”
Solution : False Carolers
Ronda
HINT 1 : “thick slime residue near the air vents”
HINT 2 : “cat hasn’t wanted to come back inside”
Solution : Lussi
Personal Thoughts : (The fact the cat doesn’t want to come back inside is a VERY weak hint, in my opinion. The caller doesn’t sound like the cat is missing, just that it refuses to come into the house. I think the entry should imply or state that animals instinctually avoid it’s hunting grounds or something. Either that, or the caller’s line should have been written to make it clear that the cat is missing.)
Kim
HINT 1 : “I THINK THERE’S AN AVALANCHE”
HINT 2 : *background noises*
Solution : Avalanche
Personal Thoughts : (The Rule of Three)
Sam
HINT 1 : “hurting very badly”
HINT 2 : “horrid little bump forming”
Solution : Red Nose
Steven
HINT 1 : “shoes squeaking”
HINT 2 : “came in to steal my Santa outfit”
Solution : Troll
Personal Thoughts : (This one stumped me for a bit before I realized that it wasn’t about the outfit being Santa’s. It was about the outfit being warm clothing)
DAY 3
HINT 1 : “felt an earthquake”
HINT 2 : “godless Hendersons”
Solution : The Locomotive
Personal Thoughts : (The entry states that children with sufficient faith are known to return … the caller calling the family “godless” implies the lost a child)
Nick
HINT 1 : “thieves cackle”
HINT 2 : “cleaned out the fridge and cabinets”
Solution : Yulemen
Ray
HINT 1 : “in my corn flakes / the ceiling / my coffee / the wallpaper”
HINT 2 : “make this god forsaken demon go away”
Solution : Yule Goat
Personal Thoughts : (I wasn’t sure if the demon bit was due to paranoia, sleep deprivation, or the fact that goats are used in a lot of demonic imagery. But those are the most likely things being referenced with that bit)
Kathy
HINT 1 : “Everything is shaking!!!”
HINT 2 : *background noises*
Solution : Avalanche
Personal Thoughts : (The Rule of Three)
Doroth
HINT 1 : “wooden floors are scratched to hell”
HINT 2 : “sap and needles and stuff littered around”
Solution : Belsnickel
Laura
HINT 1 : “Satanic symbols”
HINT 2 : “not acting like himself lately”
Solution : Hans
Personal Thoughts : (The strange markings mentioned in the entry was really easy for me to skim over. But that’s on me, not the devs ^-^; ) (The entry referring to possession as “occupation” is SOOOO much more ominous.)
Denise
HINT 1 : “house is falling apart”
HINT 2 : “people hauling around giant rocks”
Solution : Cloch
Georgia
HINT 1 : “Postman Peter collapsed in pieces”
HINT 2 : “STEAL our Post Office!”
Solution : Animation
Personal Thoughts : (This one took me a while because I was so focused on figuring out why the Post Office was stolen and burned.) (How does a person steal a Post Office? It must be a GINGERBREAD Post Office! So who is Postman Peter, then? It must be a gingerbread man!)
Wade
HINT 1 : “carrying some kind of paper or note”
HINT 2 : <cat yowling>
Solution : The Mouse King
Personal Thoughts : (The paper note threw me for a bit, but then I realized it’s referring to the “attempts at communication” part of the Mouse King entry. Also, the yowling cat ended up being a reminder that the devs rarely throw a sound effect in for no reason. The cat is wanting to hunt the mouse! As an added bonus, Hudson says The Mouse King was last seen wearing a disguise. Thus the Halloween mask referenced by the caller.)
Porter
HINT 1 : “leave these creepy little dolls”
HINT 2 : “crony old arms of hers”
Solution : The Gift Hag
Personal Thoughts : (This is just commentary : I love the subversion of the “evil old woman” trope. The bed hag and the gift hag are just nice old ladies who want to help and be nice <3 )
DAY 4
HINT 1 : “last night”
HINT 2 : “drank the milk”
Solution : Common Hobb
Personal Thoughts : (I got so focused on trying to figure out what I was supposed to assume the intruder was “fiddling around” with that I almost didn’t ask the most important questions : why milk? What is known to drink milk in the middle of the night?)
Dale
HINT 1 : “Northern lights”
HINT 2 : “Texas”
Solution : The Twilight
Personal Thoughts : (These were all pretty cut and dry. The sky is weird colored. Must be the Twilight)
Stella
HINT 1 : “from the mountain”
HINT 2 : “my baby”
Solution : Oggress
Personal Thoughts : (This was hard to deduce while having to rely on memory, but still a very fair challenge! There’s actually a LOT of information here. You just have to realize that there are two types of things going on. The “they” are referring to Yulemen. And “something coming from the mountain” refers to the Oggress living in “higher elevations.” Also, “they” were already here, so the “something” is likely a singular thing. The Yulemen want the baby because the Oggress wants the baby. The caller preventing the Yulemen from entering incited the Ogress to descend the mountain.)
Shepp
HINT 1 : “darting through the neighborhood”
HINT 2 : “nude”
Solution : Yule Cat
Personal Thoughts : (The bit about darting through the neighborhood being a reference to the entry advising to “take quick action” is a nice bit of writing.)
Geoffrey
HINT 1 : “storm is bad”
HINT 2 : “now she’s in pain”
Solution : The Hunt
Personal Thoughts : (A person could easily misinterpret the caller, thinking that the storm is a hinderence to them going to get help. The mother was caught in the storm, so something must have happened during the walk. Can’t be an accident because he said she’s in pain, not “she got hurt.” Therefore, the caller is actually implying that being caught in the storm is the reason she’s in pain. Tricky writing! From there you just have to look for entries where a storm is relevant. And the rest is just ruling out irrelvant information.)
Theodore
HINT 1 : “AVALANCHE!”
HINT 2 : *background noise*
Solution : Mountain Warlock
Personal Thoughts : (Rule of 3 being used to try to trick the player into thinking it’s another avalanche. But in the background you can clearly hear chanting just like in the entry.)
Rod
HINT 1 : “sky looks all green”
HINT 2 : “I have a bad feeling”
Solution : The Twilight
Personal Thoughts : (The subtle reminders that this entity eats bad vibes.)
Joseph
HINT 1 : “raging outside”
HINT 2 : “orb on our porch”
Solution : The Saint
Personal Thoughts : (This was really hard for me because the caller says “this kid” so I kept dismissing the Saint because he’s a warlock, and warlocks look old. So I am not sure who delivered it. The entry doesn’t say anything about servants or shape changing abilities, so I am choosing to imagine it’s a friend of the neighbor who is worried that the son was so bad that the Sinner would come snatch him, so the friend took the gift THEY got and put it on the caller’s door to protect them. However that puts the Saint as a background character in the caller’s narrative, which I’m torn on. In part because then it would be ambiguous as to whether the correct answer is the Saint or the Sinner, since the narrative I’ve constructed in my head is entirely dependant on the Sinner being relevant to said narrative.)
Beverly
HINT 1 : “trying to bite people”
HINT 2 : “reindeer headpiece”
Solution : Antler Growths
Personal Thoughts : (It’s not a headpiece! It’s his head!)
Woodrow
HINT 1 : “coughing their lungs out”
HINT 2 : “last night’s storm”
Solution : Wight
Personal Thoughts : (Emphasis on the storm being LAST NIGHT. It’d be really easy to get tricked into thinking this was The Hunt. He mentions the lines being open and spending the night in a bunker during a storm. Which are all relevant to the Hunt. However, the Hunt is done. It’s gone. The thing he needs to know about now are those who didn’t spend the night in a bunker!)
Dennis
HINT 1 : “so much blood”
HINT 2 : “and straw”
Solution : Perchta
Personal Thoughts : (It’d be easy to link Laura’s husband setting up a scarecrow in the attic and get hung up on making Hans fit. But only one entry talks about making people into scarecrows. Speaking of, look up Perchta. The tales we told our children were so brutal, once upon a time.)
William
HINT 1 : “the lights”
HINT 2 : “I feel… so empty…”
Solution : The Twilight
Personal Thoughts : (I thought for a moment this could be Time Wisp again. The emptiness being a symptom of existentialism. But I think this is just the effect of the Twilight ramping up. The first caller felt uneasy. The second felt forboding. And this one feels empty.)
Mariah
HINT 1 : “took my baby”
HINT 2 : “carrying chains”
Solution : The Sinner
Personal Thoughts : (This got me hung up for a second because I tripped myself up by recognizing the Sinner as a reference to Krampus. Krampus punishes bad children. This made me start down the line of thinking how the caller referring to Greta as her baby could mean she’s a literal baby. If that’s the case, how can it be the Sinner? Can a baby be a bad child? But then I realized : the Sinner’s entry doesn’t say anything about bad children. Similarly, the Saint’s entry doesn’t give any indication on who the Saint leave’s the gifts for. Or why. This subversion of expectations can be very tricky, because it can make a player feel like they’re being lied to by omission. But the game establishes very solidly that nothing is like modern ideas of these things, so if we make any assumptions based on outside preconceptions, that’s on the player.)
Becky
HINT 1 : “we’re just boiling alive”
HINT 2 : That’s it. It’s hot. That’s all you really get.
Solution : Dwarves
Personal Thoughts : (This is possibly the weakest call of the DLC. Maybe the game. I felt so very little confidence in this one. The only relevant information given is that it is hot. Every other call has at least two things to corroborate off of. So that made me think that the caller saying the heat keeps getting turn on was relevant. Which would then imply the dwarf was messing with the thermostat. And to me it doesn’t feel like there’s anything in the entry that would indicate dwarves are intelligent enough to operate a thermostat.)
Jana
HINT 1 : “the lights”
HINT 2 : “it’s coming for us”
Solution : The Twilight
Personal Thoughts : (And the negative emotional vibe has reached a climax. Very cool way to tell a story.)
