In the high-intensity world of Arma 3 PvP, knowing how to survive is crucial. By optimizing your keyboard setup, honing your mouse precision, and understanding common issues, you can gain an edge over your opponents and increase your chance of survival. Let’s dive in and learn how leaning can save your life in Arma 3.
Introduction
You got hit but did not die?
You shoot anyone but they not flinch?
I make you understand to kill these whitches.
Arma 3 networking is ♥♥♥♥.
So it’s all calculated client side and then SIMULATED on the other clients. That means you ALWAYS see the projection and or prediction of what is about to happen.
+
Server is sometimes VERY stupid and does not properly recognize if you are doing some stuff like leaning if you turn quickly. That is also why you see people running about on some severs who are just constantly leaning to one side. Because the server did not get it yet.
So this is also why, you hit someone without actually killing them. Because on your end it is all fine, but no on the other persons end. Which is a completly diffrent situation.
people coming around corners, you shoot them but you do not actually kill them.
Because they might be running around, see you fire and go back. The game on the other hand projected, that they were still going ahead but then suddenly stopped and tries to correct them back where they actually are. That might not compute and seem like they moonwalk back or tank hits if standing still infront of you.
You get killed in a defensive position without even seeing anyone.
Same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ here, if somone runs to a house and quickly leans in, the lean animation sometimes does not trigger. Person is still upright but on their side is leaning in and can perfectly kill you without you being even aware.
Seek out straight corridors, stairs or angles, that forces them to go straigt. (see the doodle)
if on open field, run in unpredictable patterns at varying walking speeds. That increases your chances to survive.
Also Aim for the torso, that is more likely to kill them but if aiming for the head SPREAD to the sides.
Keep moving and do not be static and move at varying speeds that decreases the chance of an enemy hitting you. Moving at all or straving left or right already improves your chances.
I might record some vids for that in the future but for now just have a friend running in random circles at diffrent speed and they slide about which is basicly the server trying to correct it’s false assumptions.
Or just rush into a house quickly look to the side and lean in wakling direction and have a friend shooting you. You will most likely survive.
Hit them where it hurts.

DO NOT SHOOT ARMS OR LEGS. That will do nothing.
If they hold the Gun to their chest and you hit it IT WILL ABSORB DAMAGE (so called Pass Through).
That goes for Vanilla Arma AND Ace (advanced combat enviroment), so also for KAT and simmilar mods.
DAMAGE is not damage, that is “hit” in the ammo data.
it is being reduced due to air friction, “initSpeed” is the start, then it will be reduced by “airFriction” and then compared to “typicalSpeed”. Those get compared and multiplied with the “hit” so I have 870/890 x 10.1 = 9,87 at some random time later
Example
Weapon
hlc_rifle_ak74m
displayName = “Izhmash AK74M”;
Magazin
rhs_30Rnd_545x39_7N22_AK
displayName = “30rnd AK-74 7N22”;
initSpeed = 890;
Bullet
rhs_B_545x39_7N22_Ball
airFriction = -0.00085;
hit = 10.1;
typicalSpeed = 890;
If you then compare it to the HItbox health points you get DAMAGED.
So each hitbox has 1 at default ( look the video above to get an idea ) and each hitbox will be increased in “health” with their armor value.
The only important most of the time are head and Chest. NOTE: THE FACE HAS NO ARMOR!!!!
Example
Helmet
rhs_6b26_digi_bala
displayName = “6B26 EMR-Summer (Balaclava)”;
6
Vest
TRYK_V_ArmorVest_green
displayName = “TRYK Carrier Rig Lite (Green)”;
16
So we compare the infllicted HIT with the HITBOX HEALTH. Boom we get another percentage.
If it is greater than 1, person dead in vanilla.
in ACE or KAT there will be diffrenr wound rolls according to the damage, more damage more and worse wounds.
So If I do 8 hitpoint damage (9mm point blank) and have a Helmet with a value of 6 (helmet) + 1 (head itself) I die in vanilla because 8/7 = 1,14 If I shoot the face which has no armor, that is even worse: 8/1 = 8,00
On a vest totaly diffrent thing. it has 16 for example. (most about 20, EOD vests even 60 or so) So that will only do 0,5.
Got it?
it is hit / Hitbox health = Damage threshold ~ which is basicly damage.
Here some wierd graph I made on the upper one you see hit over time and range and below you see the Thresholds according to the examples above.
Hit the Head
Hit the Torso
More Armor good. Face unprotected.
USE LEANING!
USE IT!
If you lean to the left around corners without posture adjustment you are easy prey.
BAD LEFT LEANING!
GOOD LEFT LEANING
I think the diffrence is obvious:
Leaning saves lifes.
Adjust mouse settings for better aim
AND remove mouse acceleration by windows if you have it! Because it is ENABLED on default!
Keyboard setup
Once you are used to these settings you will greatly improve your survivability

I advise to practice here. It is first person only and fast paced, that way you have a good expirence how to survive in PvP enviroments.
Check if they clip through the ground

And use ranging with page up and down
Be aware that there are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ out there who abuse bugs.
needless to explain that you can glitch and do this and that.
good luck
