General Mechanics
They usually start out with 3 specials at game start, with one being permanent.
All specials (but Sanity) will be consumed on use, and you can only get them back after using their hustle, Check Pages, or by using their super (which is faster), Borrowed Knowledge, which costs 1 level of super.
Check Pages will always give 2 specials and it will give one each time you hold the animation another cycle. Borrowed Knowledge will always give 3 specials and will also give one each time you hold the animation another cycle.
The specials you get are based off of the current time left in the game, so it’s pretty much going to be random.
Each special comes as a page. You can place the page somewhere close to you, or you can place it directly on you. The instant you touch the page, you will do that action, regardless of what you were doing before, unless you are being comboed. If that’s the case, hitting your page will throw you in the direction of your DI. Placing it on you activates it instantly. Pages will slowly drift towards the position you assigned them relative to you if you move locations.
YOU CAN CHANGE THE DIRECTION/ANGLE OF THE ATTACK WITH THE DI WHEEL. This allows for various mix ups, as having all of your specials gives you many options.
Check Pages can also act as a counter past a certain frame, dodging through the attack and guaranteeing a free special gain.
All of the supers revolve around the pages, with each special having a different effect. The one exception to this is Wonder Book, which gives some additional buffs.
Skip Chapter is a 1 level super that normally is a fash dash, but if you line the grey circle effect with a page you placed, you will immediately teleport to that page and do the attack, which allows for long range mix ups.
Wonder Books is a super that will give you one of 4 random effects:
- Book of Nok (Red): Gives you 4 options whenever you next touch the ground. Is permanent.
- Book of DI (Blue): Makes your DI affect both your attack range and hit direction more.
- Book of Miko (Green): Gives you access to the super Divine Funeral (which spawns 5 green pages in a star shape) and makes your pages have a fairly delayed attack at their location.
- Book of Despair (Purple): Buffs most of your normal attacks and gives some of them extended range.
Each time you use it, you will pull out a book that flashes a random color. The color is the tell of what buff you get. Each time you use the super, it gets more expensive. The cost goes 1, 2, 3, then 4.
Husk of a Grade 1 Fixer is a 3 level super that is only available once you have used every special attack. This is a cool combo-super that will kill the opponent with a special animation if the opponent is below 1300 health.
