Introduction
Special thanks to tintingaroo for the comments in the other guide that provide screenshots, saving me god knows how many hours of fruitless searching.
For those who want to try finding the hats by themselves
Almost any wall, floor, or ceiling can have a secret area behind it, meaning that in many cases, you would have to run against every wall, bonk against every ceiling, and press down against every piece of floor in a level in order to find the secret areas. The game does not do a great job of providing hints at where the secret areas are. At first I thought the random swords stuck in the ground indicated a secret was nearby, but as I played, I realized this wasn’t the case.
To make matters worse, there are blocks that crumble a few seconds after you touch them, but that do not make any noise. The dev often uses these as an additional way to hide secret areas, meaning that it is not always enough to simply walk into a wall or bonk against a ceiling – you have to ensure you wait those few seconds for the block to disappear before you are able to pass into the secret area.
Furthermore, several of these secret areas are inaccessible without using movement techniques that the game doesn’t teach you (see next section for more details).
“Hidden” movement techniques
Short Hop
In most platformers, jump height is controlled by how long you hold the jump button. In SDB, you will always jump the same height regardless of how long you hold the button. However, you can force a lower jump by holding the “down” button before you jump.
Long Jump
Simply done by rolling before a jump, it allows you to get much more distance. This also can allow you to reach further overhangs for wallclimbs.
Mushroom Jump
Technically not its own movement technique, but since so many of the hats require this trick, I figured I would list it. This is just a long jump done right before jumping off of a mushroom. This will give you the distance of a long jump combined with the height of the mushroom’s bounce, allowing you to reach areas that are seemingly very far out of reach.
Sloped wallclimb
Technically this is no different from a regular wallclimb, but since some hats require this and it at first does not seem possible, I want to list it here. Basically, you have to mash your jump button as quickly as possible without holding a direction. If done correctly, each jump will slide you up the slope a tiny bit, and allow you to initiate another jump.
Standing on spikes
This can be done by initiating a roll midair then landing on the spikes during the roll. If done correctly, you will end the roll and be standing in the spikes without taking damage. This has limited uses, the only one I was really able to find was using this to collect coins that fall into spikes.

Stealth
If you shoot a ground enemy, it will instantly face you. This means that if you shoot an enemy and it is close enough, it will immediately notice you. Therefore, be sure to take them out from a distance.
I got this on level B (thanks to SkyStarMania for this tip).
