If you’re new to Sons of the Forest, this guide will help you save time by showing you how to set up key bindings, adjust the Options menu, and understand some game mechanics. Instead of learning through trial and error, you can read this guide and jump right into the game. Let’s get started!
Before you even Click New Game
Consider going into Options then Graphics and setting Gamma and Brightness to MAX !!! – this will allow you to see better at night or perhaps leave it at the default you can always change it later.
You could also go to Options then Graphics and tweak the grass settings this when set to lower levels enables you to see animals better but its up to you.
Realize when in Options you can hover your mouse over something and at the to in yellow text it will try to explain what the setting does.
DIFFICULTY LEVELS AND CUSTOMIZING – Have it your way not there way.
What difficulty level are you going to choose – you could choose Peaceful mode this is no enemies so you can learn the mechanics of the game before you jump into a hostile environment.
If you want to learn the mechanics of the game and how to for example make a spear or bow before you just get dumped onto the map then perhaps it may be even better to choose Custom rather than Peaceful.
Custom allows you to turn enemies off – you can also make sure it starts in Spring rather than the default of Summer and you can specifically tweak some other things. So perhaps check out custom too before you take the plunge.
You Survived the crash now what
INVENTORY
Ok so now you are alive wooo hooo Press i key as in Invincible – the letter i – so you can open up your Inventory this is the map – It will have you press the E key then click on the Emergency pack this opens up and presents you with the Lighter, the Book, the GPS, the Knife, the Hatchet.
HOTKEYS
Right Mouse Click to remove these things off of the mat. Give Hotkeys to various things by hovering your mouse over for example the Hatchet and then pressing the number 1 key – This enables you to bring up the hatchet when you press the number 1 on the keyboard. Do the same for the knife pick a number.
There is no need to give hotkeys to the GPS, The Book, the Lighter because the GPS or Map is brought up by the M key, the Lighter by the L key, and the Book by the B key.
THE G KEY
If you bring something up in your hand you can put it back in your inventory by pressing the G key. The GPS, Book, and Lighter are put back by pressing the G, B, or L key respectively OR the G key. Whereas if you assign 1 to the hatchet and you bring it up and you press 1 again nothing happens if you press 2 the knife comes up and hatchet goes away if you actually assigned 2 to the knife. Press the G key to put these back.
THE BACKPACK
If you press the i key quickly it brings up the inventory mat thing … if you hold down the i key it brings up the backpack – I think you open up the inventory and click on the back pack and drag it to center of mat then drag things onto it so you can get to them quick by simply holding down the i key but I do not use this feature .. yet…
SAVE THE GAME:
One last thing in this section – make or do a save … save the game.. .do this by placing a tarp down and you need a stick… There should be a tarp in one of the larger big plastic yellow containers near where you woke up at look for a stick somewhere press E key to pick up stick … Once you acquire a tarp looking thing out of the box (by pressing the E key when you see the tarp) and once you grab a stick the press the i key open up the inventory and find the tarp … do this by moving the mouse all over the place until you see it then click the EQUIP key button and look down on the ground and move around if necessary until you see a dashed square and when you Left Mouse Click you can then put down the tarp on the ground .. Now, you only need one stick to make a save thing .. so now move around the tarp looking down at the corners eventually you will get in the right spot to see a white arrow click and this places a stick under the tarp and now you can save the game. If you see a red arrow it won’t let you. Move around looking down until you see the white arrow.
REALIZE – You can at any time you want move over to this tarp thing and if you get in exactly the right spot you will see the letter C .. press C and hold it down this breaks down the tarp and puts it back in your inventory .. what this means is that you can now move around on the map and do a save anytime you want … but being a pro you will also build saves out of wood but if your away from a save remember you can plop this down quick .. you can ALSO SLEEP using this tarp and it does not disappear.
Just a few things to realize
- You need tape to make a spear – it takes one tape to make a spear
- You need feathers and tiny rocks to make arrows
- It seems you can hold usually 20 of about each item but not big rocks, meat, or arrows.
- Drying racks seem to take a long time to dry – Press E key quick one time to take dried meat off of the drying rack – hold E to eat meat of drying rack this will eat raw or dried meat. Dried and Cooked meat gives better benefits.
Your inventory can hold 7 meat – the only way to remove DRIED meat from your inventory is to eat it – so if you fill up our inventory with 4 or 5 dried meat and you kill stuff to get raw meat its a hassle. If you have raw meat in your inventory simply go up to drying rack and press the E key and you can then click on the raw meat which will pop up to put it on drying rack any DRIED meat you will not be able to move.
when cooking meat as soon as you put it on a fire it can be eaten meaning it will let you eat it but this is stupid rather let it cook – it will change color – THEN eat it – you get better benefits AFTER it cooks.
Always gather rocks and sticks especially if you use the bow and arrow a lot.
To build a better fire put down the usual easy fire by breaking two sticks then also add stones by clicking on a stone in your inventory and placing them around the fire. It was easier with “The Forest” you simply click click click and if you had them they went down…

This seems to be a better wiki for sons of forest https://sonsoftheforest.wiki.gg/wiki/Sons_of_the_Forest_Wiki
Press middle mouse button to toggle view of the GPS realize you don’t get to see the entire map like you did in “The Forest” but someone said you can get on the glider and bring up the GPS and take a screen shot you can also perhaps go to the internet and get one … good luck …. !!!
