In this guide, I’ll explain how to acquire every sake and booze, which allow us to listen to some interesting side stories from a few NPCs.
Before we start
1. This guide contains spoilers, which will be tagged as such
2. There are total of 12 drinks in the game – 3 of each kind:
– Unrefined Sake
– Ashina Sake
– Monkey Booze
– Dragonspring Sake
3. Acquiring all 12 drinks is possible ONLY IF WE CHOOSE TO ,,break the iron code, stay loyal to Kuro” during our confrontation with Great Shinobi Owl!
4. One of the drinks is available only after entering a second memory, available just after the fight with Great Shinobi Owl
5. Some of the last few drinks will become available only after getting to Fountainhead Palace – an endgame location
6. Drinks may be given to three different NPCs: Sculptor, Emma and Isshin. If you want to listen to all their dialogues, do so BEFORE FIGHTING the final boss of the Fountainhead Palace – The Divine Dragon, as that’s the point of no return!
7. The screenshots were made on already existing file, where all the drinks have already been collected (yeah, I’m too lazy to start a new save file). However, screenshots contain circles/arrows, which will either help you to navigate through the areas, or just show the place where certain drink is.
Unrefined Sake
2. We will get the second Sake after defeating Juzou the Drunkard near the end of Hirata Estate, just before fighting Lady Butterfly .
I suggest stealthy taking care of his bodyguards and then fighting him while staying behind his back – this way, the fight becomes much easier.
3. The third Sake will be awarded to us after taking care of Tokujiro the Glutton (in fact, he’s the same mini-boss as the one we fight at the Hirata Estate). To find him, teleport to the ,,Hidden Forest” idol in ,,Ashina Depths” area. From there, go in the direction of a campfire in the middle of the area. Then, go to the left (be careful not to fall! Down there is the boss arena of the Headless, who may be a great challenge without preparation!).
After that, hug the wall and after a short time, you’ll encounter the arena of Tokujiro the Glutton (who now drinks alone with monkeys, or something like that, idk).
Ashina Sake
Take the sample and return to Emma so she can continue her research. Rest by the idol and talk to Emma again, and she will give you a Dragon’s Blood Droplet . Use it at the idol to heal all the NPCs, then talk to the Sculptor and then to Emma. She will be grateful for your help and will give you Ashina Sake as a reward.
If you neglect this short quest, Emma will disappear from the Dilapidated Temple later in the game, making it impossible to talk to her for a while. However, there is no need to worry, because we can still complete her quest. Emma can then be found in Upper Tower – Kuro’s Room, after the fight with Genichiro Ashina. It will then be possible to talk to her and complete the quest.
2. To get the second sake, we have to teleport to the ,,Mibu Village” idol in the ,,Ashina Depths” area. Progress through the village, but keep to the left side. After a while, you’ll encounter a field with a large group of enemies. Our drink is located just behind them, in front of the shrine.
3. The third Sake is probably the most hidden one in the game, as it requires us to access The Second Memory. After fighting Great Shinobi Owl, go down and talk to Kuro. After that, go behind the wall and eavesdrop on Kuro and Emma.
After that, rest by the idol and confront Emma, who has now moved upstairs. Agree to her plan and follow her – teleport to the ,,Old Grave” idol in ,,Ashina Castle” area. Go through the gates, where you will find Emma standing in front of the graves.
Talk to her and teleport to Dilapidated Temple. You will notice that Emma is inside. Your next task is eavesdropping on her and the Sculptor. Go behind the temple and do so. After that, confront Emma to reveal her secret. She will give you Father’s Bell Charm. Use it to access the second memory BE CAREFUL! If you use your father’s bell charm, some of the areas in the first memory will be replaced with the areas from the second memory. I recommend completing the first memory before entering into the second one! After getting access to the second memory, progress through the estate until you get to the arena of Juzou the Drunkard. In one of the side buildings, there is a group of soldiers and on the floor next to them – Ashina Sake.
Monkey Booze
2. After mourning the death of the monkeys, it is time to find the second booze. Teleport to the ,,Shugendo” idol in ,,Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo” area and go up.
After reaching the bridge, turn around to find red and white pinwheel (yellow circle) – one of the items for Kotaro’s questline. Next to us, however, is the place where we may drop down. Do so, and when at the bottom, jump right to land on the wooden planks.
After reaching the end, jump up.
After we reach the top, we may find white pinwheel (yellow circle) – another item for Kotaro’s questline. Go right, in the direction of another wooden planks and climb up.
You will reach two separate rooms. Enter the second one (with visible hole in the wall) and collect Monkey Booze from the hands of the center statue.
3. To find our final booze, teleport to the ,,Guardian Ape’s Burrow” idol OR if it’s locked, to the ,,Poison Pool” idol in ,,Ashina Depths” area. Enter the cave where we fought the Ape Duo and you will see one of the enemies, barely living and lying on the floor. Look up and you’ll notice the grapple point. Use your grappling hook.
After that, go in one direction (stick to the right side and ignore the exit, where we may jump up on the left) until you see a monkey with the drink next to it. Kill it and collect our final Monkey Booze.
Dragonspring Sake
2. Unfortunately, the second sake is not that easy to find. First, teleport to the ,,Flower Viewing Stage” idol in ,,Fountainhead Palace” area. Turn around and enter the manor while hugging the right side.
After a while, you’ll find a hole filled with water. Jump in and swim across to access the hidden room.
In the secret room, you’ll find some useful items, as well as the chest containing Water of the palace.
Collect it and teleport to the ,,Wedding Cave Door” idol in ,,Ashina Depths” area. Turn around and walk until you reach the house with some enemies outside.
Stand in front of the building and you’ll notice opening on the right side. Enter through it and walk until you find a secret entrance to the house.
Inside, you will find Head Priest of The Village – probably the greatest drunkard the Ashina has ever seen. Speak to him and give him the water of the palace. In exchange, he will reward us with Dragonspring Sake.
Although you may skip this part, I highly recommend sticking to his questline a little bit more. After getting Dragonspring Sake, rest at the idol and return to the Head Priest. You will notice that he transformed into Palace Noble and the only way to put him out of misery is to kill him. Do so, and you’ll be awarded with 5 Treasure Carp Scales!
3. To find our final drink, teleport to the ,,Great Sakura” idol in ,,Fountainhead Palace” area. From there, turn around and you’ll notice a group of Okami Warriors. One of them wears a purple armor – that’s our target. Kill her and you will be awarded with Dragonspring Sake – our final drink!
After acquiring all drinks, our inventory should look like this (I know, the screenshot does not contain the English subsitles, but I’m sure you’re able to distinguish one drink from another, right?)
Note that in the inventory, Ashina Sake from Emma and Unrefined Sake from Isshin are unique items and they do not stack with the other drinks. However, they still count as a normal Ashina Sake and Unrefined Sake.
Thank you for following my guide. I hope that I helped some of you in finding the hidden drinks! 🙂
