A guide containing information and tactics on how to unlock all achievements of the Hunter’s Call (Fish) faction, including the Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves.
Introduction
In this guide, I will explain the steps you need to follow and the actions you need to take to earn the Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves title. There are a total of 57 achievements. You can find these achievements in this guide under 3 main sections.
Overview / Tips
🐟 The only way to find fish and meats is not just by hunting them. They can also come from these sources:
- Randomly floating barrels in the water,
- Barrels in shipwrecks,
- Chests in abandoned rowboats on islands,
- Storage crates on islands,
- Sometimes even food barrels from Skeleton Ships…
Never skip these, as they will significantly speed up your progress. While sailing from one place to another, your crew members can jump around to gather these resources.
🐟 You cannot sell partially eaten fish or meat. If you accidentally attempt to eat a food item, quickly press a shortcut key to cancel the action when your character picks up another item.
🐟 While the Heart of Fire Tall Tale is active, skeletons don’t spawn on islands. I haven’t tested this myself, but it might be worth checking, especially when chasing Pondies and Treacherous Plunder.
🐟 Meats are easier to find, so they are not as important (Kraken meat is a bit harder, though). However, I recommend not eating fish until you’re sure of their value. If you eat a rare fish, you might regret it later. Completing some fish types can take hours.
🐟 You can sell Mermaid & Siren Gems to the Hunter’s Call representatives to level up. However, in my opinion, it’s not necessary because if you aim to complete all achievements, you’ll reach level 50 comfortably in the process. But since some players want to reach level 50 earlier, I’ve mentioned this for your reference.
🐟 Try to sell fish without stocking too many. If you store them in your ship’s barrels, you’ll lose them when the ship sinks or if it gets stolen.
🐟 Even while your anchor is dropped, your ship will slowly turn and change direction over time. If you don’t anchor, this effect will be more noticeable. This information will be helpful if you’re planning to use the strategy of park-and-sell while staying out of the sea zone. If you calculate the direction your ship is turning and leave room accordingly before dropping the anchor, you’ll need to adjust the ship less.
There are small islands on the map called Sea Outposts. You can go to these islands and sell your items to the fishermen standing alone at the end of the pier.
If you are traveling on a personal ship purchased with the captaincy mechanics, starting from 2023, Sovereigns will also buy Hunter’s Call loot from you. They take a small cut from the loot they buy.
For you to observe the regions:
A nice map created by Reddit user adsci.
0. Yem Çeşitleri
- Grubs: White worms. Found in sandy areas.
- Earthworms: Pink worms. Found in grassy/soil areas.
- Leeches: Purple worms. Found where land meets the sea, on the shoreline.
- You can buy them in boxes from Merchant Alliance or Hunter’s Call representatives. They are called “Bait Crates.”
- If you’re on a captain’s ship, you can buy them from the Shipwright (the character selling ship coverings) at the Outposts.
- They can be found in barrels, storage crates, and rowboat chests you encounter while exploring.
- You can collect them manually by digging with a shovel. The ground types where they can be found are mentioned above.
1. Fish
There are 10 different types of fish in the game. I will break them down into subcategories. Each fish also has 5 different variants.
Base, Common, Uncommon, Night, and Rare. The value ranking of these types is as follows: Rare > Uncommon > Common & Night > Base.
The Night type can only be caught when it’s night in the game. The others appear randomly based on chance.
Each fish has a Trophy size, which occasionally appears by chance. These are larger, harder to catch, but when sold, they give more money and reputation compared to their normal counterparts. They also restore more health when cooked.
- Attaching bait to the fishing rod: When you’re in the menu that opens by pressing the Q key, press F. This will open the rod menu. Select the rod. While holding the rod, press Q again, and then press R to open the bait menu. From there, select the bait based on the fish you want to catch.
- Tiring the Fish:When a fish bites the hook, to tire it out, you need to pull the rod in the opposite direction to where the fish is pulling. If the fish pulls to the left, hold down the D key. If the rod is moving forward, hold down the S key, and so on. Don’t reel in the fish before it gets tired, or you’ll lose it.
- Reeling in the Fish: Once the fish is tired, use the left mouse button to reel in the rod and pull the fish towards you. When you’ve pulled it enough, your character will lift the fish out of the water.
- After a successful catch, the fish will be hanging at the end of your rod. While the rod is selected, hold down the F key to collect the fish. Be careful not to cast the rod back into the water while the fish is still hanging on it, or you’ll lose it.

🐟 You can sell fish in raw, undercooked, fully cooked, or burnt states, each of which affects commendations. You’ll earn more money and experience points with fully cooked fish, but I think it’s not worth cooking them, as you’ll easily reach level 50 before unlocking all achievements.
🐟 It’s helpful to choose the fishing area as appropriately as possible to allow better focus. For example, if you want to catch Wildsplash in The Wilds, but you do this next to a wreck, you’ll also catch Wrecker fish on your line.
1.1.Splashtail
Curvy Tail types:
- Ruby – Base
- Sunny – Common
- Indigo – Uncommon
- Umber – Rare
- Seafoam – Night
1.2. Plentifin
Plentifin types:
- Olive – Base
- Amber – Common
- Cloudy – Uncommon
- Bonedust – Rare
- Watery – Night
1.3. Ancientscale
Ancientscale types:
- Almond – Base
- Sapphire – Common
- Smoke – Uncommon
- Bone – Rare
- Starshine – Night
1.4. Wildsplash
Wildsplash types:
- Russet – Base
- Sandy – Common
- Ocean – Uncommon
- Muddy – Rare
- Coral – Night
1.5. Devilfish
Devilfish types:
- Ashen – Base
- Seashell – Common
- Lava – Uncommon
- Forsaken – Rare
- Firelight – Night
Since volcanoes frequently erupt in the Devil’s Roar region, stopping randomly with your ship can be dangerous.
I suggest mooring your ship just west of the Roaring Traders sea zone at coordinates U-20. You can fish there, then hop to the sea zone where you caught the fish and sell it. The harbor area of the Roaring Traders is directly in the volcano’s impact zone. However, if you move a little west from the edge of the sea zone, the volcano won’t reach you.
I wouldn’t recommend going to the Brian’s Bazaar sea zone and its surrounding area, as it falls within the volcano’s range of influence.
The area within the circle is just a simple example; you can fish around there. The color of the sea should be gray, don’t forget that.
1.6. Islehopper
I recommend choosing islands farther from the map’s center and avoiding those in the Devil’s Roar region. Staying away from the center reduces the chance of being disturbed by other players. Volcanoes in Devil’s Roar pose unnecessary risks for these fish.
Here is the list of types and the islands where they can be caught:
Islehopper Types:
- Stone
- Cannon Cove (G-10)
- Crook’s Hollow (M-16)
- Fetcher’s Rest (V-12)
- Sailor’s Bounty (C-4)
- Shark Bait Cove (H-19)
- Shipwreck Bay (M-10)
- Moss
- Ashen Reaches (V-23)
- Lone Cove (H-6)
- Marauder’s Arch (Q-3)
- Ruby’s Fall (Y-16)
- Thieves’ Haven (L-20)
- Wanderers Refuge (F-12)
- Honey
- Crescent Isle (B-9)
- Discovery Ridge (E-17)
- Kraken’s Fall (R-12)
- Plunder Valley (G-16)
- Sunken Grove (P-7)
- Raven – Rare type
- Mermaid’s Hideaway (B-13)
- Discovery Ridge (E-17)
- Shark Bait Cove (H-19)
- Wanderers Refuge (F-12)
- Amethyst – Can only be caught at night
- Crooked Masts (O-11)
- Devil’s Ridge (P-19)
- Flintlock Peninsula (W-14)
- Mermaid’s Hideaway (B-13)
- Old Faithful Isle (M-4)
- Smuggler’s Bay (F-3)
- Snake Island (K-16)
1.7. Pondie
You can catch Pondies more quickly in smaller ponds, as they don’t stray too far from the rod. It’s one of the fastest fish to finish because they bite more frequently and are easier to catch in a smaller area compared to sea fish.
Pondie types:
- Charcoal – Base
- Orchid – Common
- Bronze – Uncommon
- Bright – Rare
- Moonsky – Night
Here is the English translation of your text:
Mermaid’s Hideaway (B-13), located at coordinates B-13, is far from the center of the map and has a small pond. I finished catching Pondies here.
Some Skeleton Forts also have ponds, and you can try these as well:
- The Crow’s Nest Fortress (O-17)
- Shark Fin Camp (P-5)
- Hidden Spring Keep (I-8)
1.8. Battlegill
- Skeleton Ships
- Skeleton Forts (Skeleton Fort) ⭐
- Fort of the Damned
- Fort of Fortune
⭐ My personal favorite is the Skeleton Forts. Since the treasures in Fort of the Damned and Fort of Fortune are good, you will be disturbed a lot. The Skeleton Ships will constantly damage you and your ship. You can comfortably catch Battlegills by approaching the Skeleton Fort and dealing with the skeletons at the cannons targeting you.
In the locations listed under this heading, you will not catch a Battlegill on your line. This note is added to save you from unnecessary attempts.
- Ghost Fleets (Whether as a quest or as the Burning Blade fleet, Battlegill cannot be caught in either, and it does not work in Athena voyage fleets either.)
- Sea Fortresses
- Ashen Winds
- Megalodon, Kraken
Battlegill Types:
- Jade – Base
- Sky – Common
- Rum – Uncommon
- Sand – Rare
- Bittersweet – Night
Tactic:
Sometimes, when you are near certain distances from shipwrecks or islands, skeleton ships get triggered but don’t rise from the ocean floor, only the battle music plays. During this time, it is possible to catch Battlegill by casting your line. This happens rarely, but you might want to take advantage of it if it occurs.
Tactic 2:
I haven’t personally tried this. However, one of my friends sent me this video. I’m sharing it in case you’d like to try. They claim that if a Skeleton Fleet is active on a server, Battlegill can be caught at Athena’s Bounty Hideout.
1.9. Stormfish
Stormfish are attracted to Leech bait.
Stormfish Types:
- Ancient – Exclusive to Ancient Isles region
- Shores – Exclusive to Shores of Plenty region
- Wild – Exclusive to Wilds region
- Shadow – Rare
- Twilight – Night
🐟 Avoid trying to catch Stormfish with a Sloop: Sloops take damage quickly in stormy waters and sink in a short period of time.
🐟 If you plan to continuously fish during a storm, at least one person needs to stay on repair duty, as the ship could sink unnoticed.
🐟 If you don’t want to deal with repairs, you can follow the link I will provide below to calculate where the storm will go. You can leave your ship in a distant location and fish by staying on land during the storm. However, the enemies on land won’t leave you alone, so it’s up to you to decide.
🐟 The Glorious Sea Dog (K-11) island’s archway, which is not visible on the map, is considered an area outside the map. The Stormfish coming through this area during a storm are exclusively Shadow Stormfish. At night, Twilight and Shadow types may also appear. I’m not entirely sure as I’ve never tried it, but I’ve heard it from many players. It might be worth trying. K-9 and N-13 on the map are also recommended for this.
The location of the storm in Sea of Thieves is the same for every server in real-time. A group of players created an app to track the storm’s location. You can access this app from a site called Merfolk’s Lullaby. Here’s the link:

1.10. Wrecker
Wrecker Types:
- Rose – Basic (Base)
- Sun – Common (Common)
- Blackcloud – Found around shipwrecks affected by storms
- Snow – Rare (Rare)
- Moon – Night (Night)
🐟 Do not position yourself directly in front of the wreck. Try to stay at the side or cast your line from the top of the wreck into open space. If you cast your line directly at the wreck, the Wrecker may hit something and escape.
🐟 April 2023 update: The Merchant Alliance Lost Shipment and Athena’s Fortune Veil quests feature wrecks where these fish can be caught.
🐟 Wrecks that are fixed in place for cosmetic purposes (like the many cosmetic shipwrecks found on Shipwreck Bay (M-10)) do not have Wreckers.

Open the link, select the filters at the top of the list in the left column, and turn on the Shipwrecks filter under Points of Interest. You can view potential shipwreck locations on the map. There’s no guarantee, but it can make the process easier.
2. Cooking
- Chicken
- Pork
- Shark
- Snake
- Megalodon
- Kraken
To find the meats, you simply need to kill the corresponding creature. There is no need for hunting like with fish. Normal-sized animals drop 1 piece of meat upon death. The Megalodon and Kraken will drop several pieces of meat when killed.
- Only fully cooked meats affect achievements when sold. Unlike fish, selling undercooked or burned meats doesn’t contribute to achievements, and you can’t sell them when they are raw.
- Cooking times for meats are longer compared to fish.
- The monetary value of meats is lower than fish.
- There is no special method for finding Kraken or Megalodon. You’ll encounter them by chance. When the Kraken World Event ends in your server, it will randomly attack a ship. Megalodon can attack your ship while traveling between islands.
Try to gather these meats as you go around, especially from locations I mentioned at the start of the guide.
3. Merrick’s Accolades
Captain of the Killer Whale: You need to purchase all 7 pieces of the Killer Whale ship set and equip them as your ship’s skin. For this, your Hunter’s Call level needs to be 50. You can buy the pieces from the Hunter’s Call representatives located in the sea zones. To obtain these pieces, you also need to purchase the titles. A new piece unlocks every 5 levels starting from level 20.
Legendary Trophy Fish Hunter: There are 3 tiers to this achievement. The final tier requires you to find and sell 100 Trophy Fish. Any species’ Trophy counts for this achievement. For example, there is no difference in points between a Curvedtail and a Wreckfetcher.
Legendary Hunter of the Thieves’ Sea: This achievement also has 3 tiers. It progresses as you complete the Hunter’s Call achievements. Once all the achievements are unlocked, a total of 57 achievements are revealed, and this is the final one that opens.
3.1. Treacherous Plunder
Hunter’s Call is considered one of the most difficult achievements in the game. It may take several days to complete this.
The items you can catch with a baitless fishing rod that aren’t fish are as follows:
- Old boot
- Old skull
- Old hat
- Fish bones
- Plank (does not affect the achievement)
- Ashen key (does not affect the achievement)
Among these, plank and ashen key do not contribute to the achievement progress. However, selling the other 4 types of items to the Hunter’s Call representatives will progress the Treacherous Plunder achievement.
A memento from a Treacherous Plunder expedition we did with friends. In the screenshot, you can see the ashen keys and every type of Treacherous Plunder item in front of them.
I have two methods to suggest, one includes spoilers and requires access to the Shores of Gold tall tale. The other is something you can do on your first day of gameplay.
In both methods, you need to take turns killing enemies on land. Be sure to plan this with your team. The AI will constantly bother you. When you use the Heart of Fire tall tale (when it’s actively aboard your ship), this doesn’t happen, meaning creatures won’t attack you, though I’ve never tried it, but others have mentioned it—so you can give it a try. (If you’re going to use the Shores of Gold method, you can’t place the Heart of Fire tall tale on your quest table, otherwise your ship will sink, just an additional note).
You can go to a pond on an island on the map that suits you and cast a baitless rod there. The reason for choosing a pond is that pondies seem to show up more often on the rod (at least that’s how I’ve always felt).
Cast your rod towards the part of the pond closest to the land, and even if you catch a fish, it should accidentally bump and escape. You’ll need to wait, casting your rod and hoping to catch junk. I recommend Mermaid’s Hideaway, located at B-13 in the Shores of Plenty region. There’s a pond on the west side of the northern shore of the island, which you can use.
Some Skeleton Forts also have ponds, which you can try as well:
- The Crow’s Nest Fortress (O-17)
- Shark Fin Camp (P-5)
- Hidden Spring Keep (I-8)
To use this method, you need to have access to the last tale of the Shores of Gold tall tale series.
The island called Shores of Gold is located at Y-3 on the map. It doesn’t appear on the map, but once you get there, you’ll realize it’s an island. Don’t try to go there when the Shores of Gold tall tale is inactive, your ship will sink, that’s how the game mechanics work.
Once you arrive at the island, dock on the southeast side of it. Go to the spot marked with a red star in the image below, where there’s a water puddle.
Here’s the key feature: The water is shallow enough to prevent fish from grabbing your rod, but it’s deep enough for the rod to catch junk. That’s why this is the best place to fish for junk. When you cast your rod, the fish don’t grab it, causing you to cast again repeatedly. Instead, either junk/ashen keys/planks come to your rod, or nothing at all.
Example video:
In this video, they approached from the north side of the island, but they still head to the pond I recommended above.

⚠️ Important Note ⚠️
Although the Shores of Gold method is not exactly considered a “bug abuse,” you are technically tricking the game mechanics a little. I last used this method months ago, and I’m not sure if it’s still active, it might have been removed from the game. However, if it still works, it’s definitely faster than casting your rod in the open sea or a pond, so it’s worth trying.
If you wish, you can also search for Treacherous Plunder in the open sea. You won’t be constantly disturbed by enemies like on land. However, this time your rod will continuously, constantly get fish… Sea fish pull your rod farther compared to pond fish, so grinding in the sea with an “AFK” method is harder. In conclusion, I’d recommend ponds or Shores of Gold over the open sea.
