If you’re experiencing an issue where the card deck does not flip after talking to the ghost in the prolog of Reigns, this guide may have a solution for you. It’s compiled from various tips found online and personal experience, and may not work for everyone. Keep in mind that using an older version of the game (October 4, 2018) may fix the issue, but you will not have access to any features after that version. This guide utilizes a 3rd party app called DepotDownloader to download the older version, so be cautious about providing your Steam login credentials. Your game progress may be lost, but Steam achievements should remain. This guide also includes steps to prevent Steam from updating the game and potentially causing the issue again. Keep in mind that your experience may vary.
Prerequisites
- basic computer knowledge
- 20 minutes of time
- DepotDownloader
I am writing this partially from memory. Something might also be less clear for someone than for someone else. Please use comments and let me know if anything needs to be corrected.
Prepare DepotDownloader
- Open this link[github.com] in your browser and download latest version (I am using Windows, at the time of writing the filename was “DepotDownloader-windows-x64.zip”).
- Unzip the file you downloaded and open the extracted folder. There should be two files (.exe and .xml).
- Open command prompt and navigate to this location. Either by typing “cmd” in the file explorer’s address bar (which will open it in the current folder), or by opening command prompt on its own and using “cd” command to change directory.
Steps
- You should have a command prompt open and pointed to the directory with DepotDownloader. Steps are in “Prerequisites” section.
- Enter this command into the command prompt to download older game files. Parameters -app, -depot and -manifest are identifiers of the game itself and of the version we want to download. You need to insert your Steam name (the one you use for login into Steam, not what your friends see). Hit enter.
DepotDownloader.exe -app 474750 -depot 474751 -manifest 3815102441997861985 -user <your Steam name>
- You will be asked for your password. Type it in and hit enter. You might also verify a prompt from Steam Guard if you have it enabled.
- Now you should see bunch of files downloading in the console. You should see a confirmation when the download ends (“Depot 474751 – Downloaded … bytes” and “Disconnected from Steam”).
- Go back into the folder with DepotDownloader. There should be a folder named “depots” with folder “474751” and another folder “4146407” inside of it. Open it. These are the files of an older version of the game.
Steam part
- In your Steam library find Reigns, right click on it, go to “Properties…”.
- Click on “Updates”. Select “Only update this game when I launch it” in “Automatic Updates” section.
- Click on “Installed Files”. Click on “Browse…”. A folder with game files will open.
- Delete all files in this folder. You can also create a copy of this folder before deleting just in case.
- Copy all files from DepotDownloader/depots/474751/4146407 folder that you opened earlier to the game folder where you deleted the files. You can omit the folder named “.DepotDownloader”, it is not part of the game.
- Go one level up into “common” folder. Find a folder named “Reigns”, right click on it, select “Properties” and click on “Read only” in “Attributes” section so it has a tick mark, not a dash. You might confirm that you want to apply this setting to all subfolders and files, click OK on that. Another OK for the “Properties” window.
- Go one more level up so you are in “steamapps” folder. Find a file named “appmanifest_474750.acf”. Right click on that, select “Properties” and check “Read only” too. This together with the previous step should prevent any automatic updates from Steam rewriting the game files.
AppData/LocalLow part
This might not be necessary. Newest update uses different folder for storing the gamesave/config files. This might be also the reason why some players reported missing progress after updating. Newest version uses “Nerial/Reigns” while older versions use “devolver/Reigns”.
- Open “Run” dialog using Win+R key combination.
- Type in “%APPDATA%\..\LocalLow” and hit Enter. Folder will open.
- Search for a folder named “devolver” and a folder named “Reigns” inside of it, if it exists.
- If “devolver” folder exists, make a copy of “Reigns” folder inside of it and delete the “Reigns” folder.
- If “devolver” folder does not exist, you don’t need to do anything.
Conclusion
Please note that I am not a developer of DepotDownloader and cannot help you if there is any issue regarding this. Go to the GitHub page, search the Internet or ask Google.
