Welcome to my guide on all the ghosts in Phasmophobia! In this article, I’ll be sharing some important information about each ghost and their unique abilities that may not be explicitly mentioned in the game. These are things that I wish I knew when I first started playing. I’ll assume you already know the basics like Events, Hunts, evidence Difficulty, Sanity monitor, and Smudge Timers. So let’s dive in and learn more about the ghosts in this spooky game!
The Bare Basics
Sanity. Your sanity will lower when in a dark room, when you use a cursed object, and if a Ghost has uses their Sanity draining Ability on you. Many Ghosts have abilities that can decrease your sanity by a lot. Honorable Mention is Moroi which curses you when interacting with a Spirit Box or Parabolic Microphone (Having lower sanity makes the Ghost more likely to Hunt)
Smudge Timer: All ghosts have a cooldown of when you smudge it. As an example the average cool down is 90 seconds while the Demon has 60 seconds. Continuing off of cool downs The Demon has no cool down when you first enter the house to hunt. The Demon and Oni are 2 very ghosts due to how much they hate you
Evidence: Some ghosts have Forced evidence which will always show (unless doing zero evidence run. Excluding Mimic) Depending on your difficulty how much evidence you get may vary. I will discuss forced evidence below.
All Ghost Types
1. Spirit: The Spirit is a very basic Ghost with its main noticeable difference being it’s smudge timer. When you smudge Spirit they wont hunt or event for 180 SECONDS
2. Wraith: The Wraith will never step on salt. Also The Wraith is 1 of 3 ghosts that can roam towards players! If the ghost dosen’t step on salt during a hunt or an event then its likely a Wraith.
3. Phantom: The Phantom can be a tricky Ghost. If you take a picture of The Phantom during an Event and it dosen’t show up on the camera BUT it counts as a Ghost Picture then thats a Phantom. Also during hunts if you notice the ghost has been invisible for a while (blinking rates) or if you can barley see it. Then its a Phantom.
4. Poltergeist. the Poltergeist is a fun Ghost. They like to throw items around A LOT and FAR; however be careful because normal Ghosts can throw items far too. What you should look for is the consistency at which the Ghost is throwing items. Also try to note down if the item is being launched up high. If you wanna test for a Poltergeist you should make a Polty pile on a table where you know the ghost is gonna hunt through (Noteworthy A Poltergeist’s Passive ability is to launch items around when not in a hunt)
5. Banshee. A Banshee can be a hard Ghost to notice in Singleplayer due to its ability to only target 1 Player. The Banshee will target 1 player and will ROAM towards them. Whenever it hunts it will only focus on that player and wont kill anyone else! If you are playing solo then you can find the Banshee through its iconic Banshee scream on the Parabolic Microphone. Its very unique
6.Jinn. The Jinn has 2 noticeable features. The Jinn will never turn the Power Breaker off due to its ability to utilize it. Whenever The power Breaker is on The Jinn will speed up if it sees you (most of the ghosts will become faster if it sees you for a duration; however The Jinn’s speed boost will be noticeable) The Jinn will slow down once its close to you. If you don’t want The Jinn to speed up towards you then you should turn the Power breaker off or make sure your hiding. A common mistake players make against The Jinn is having The Power Breaker overload. you’ll know if it overloads when you turn the breaker on again and and all the lights are OFF. If a Ghost turns the Breaker off then the lights will stay on whenever you Power The Breaker.
7. Mare. the Mare is a basic Ghost. It’s main distinguishable trait is that they HATE lights and may change rooms if the Light is on for a while or they’ll turn the light off. The Mare will never turn the lights on or Electronics (This dosen’t include Camp stoves sadly) The Mares passive ability is that every 30 seconds you flick a lights switch around it they can IMMEDIATELY switch it off
8. Revenant. The Revenant is a fun Ghost and scary. Whenever The Revenant Hunts it will be slow when it dosen’t know where you are; however if you make noise or turn on equipment or if it sees you then it will sprint to your LAST KNOWN location.
9. Shade. Shades are arguably the most realistic Ghost in the game. They are Shy Ghosts that don’t like people so they dont interact with them; however if you leave its Ghost Room it will interact with things. Shades will NEVER do anything if your in its Ghost Room. They usually event in Shadow form
10. Demon. The Demon can INSTANTLY hunt when you open the Front Door. The Demon also has a bigger Crucifix radius. Another fact about the Demon is that its smudge timer is the shortest (60 Seconds). Even if you smudge it you arent safe for long.
11. Yurei. Yurei’s are a basic Ghost. Its main quirk is that they can slam doors that are open shut really fast. If you hear this and you check the Sanity monitor and you lost a lot of Sanity then its Yurei. Yurei IS THE ONLY GHOST that can interact with the Front Door.
12. Oni. Oni is like the Phantom but opposite. They also are aggressive and don’t like people. Oni’s will RARELY blink. You’ll see its physical form the most. They will usually Event in Physical form.
13. Yokai. Yokai’s are fun. because if you are having fun with your teammates in voice chat They’ll ruin the mood. Yokai’s are more active if someone is talking In game chat. They also are a bit Acoustic. They wont notice your equipment from the usual range. Also if you talk during a hunt it’ll take them a bit to find you compared to other Ghosts.
14. Hantu. Hantu’s are amazing. Hantu’s speed consists of the rooms temperature. As an example. Lets say The Garage is 20.C meanwhile the Dungeon is 2.C The Hantu will be faster in the Dungeon due to it being colder. You’ll notice a difference in speed as the Hantu migrates through rooms. Now Hantu’s have FORCED EVIDENCE being Temperatures. A Hantu will ALWAYS have Freezing Temperatures. Hantu also has a passive ability when if The Power Breaker is OFF then you’ll see its cold Breath physically from its model during a hunt. (Its really noticeable)
15. Goryo. Goryo is an annoying Ghost. Due to its DOTS only being visible on CAMERAS. Thats right you’ll only see its DOTS evidence on Cameras. I recommend having a Player on Van duty looking for Goryo dots. Now this tip may help you out. The Goryo will NEVER change its Ghost room. If a Ghost changes its room then Not Goryo. Gory also has FORCED EVIDENCE which are his dots.
16. Myling. Myling’s have killed me the most compared to other ghosts. This is because their footsteps are quiet and that makes you think their farther then they actually are. The main trick for Myling is to place your Flashlight on the ground in a hiding spot. If the Flashlight starts blinking BEFORE you hear The Ghosts footsteps then its a Myling. This wont work if The Ghost is on a different floor. If you have great headphones you can listen for the Ghosts footsteps and tell from there.
17. Onryo. The last basic ghost. The Onryo has a unique ability where if 3 CANDLES blow it quickly next to each other it will FORCE a hunt. Onryo will also blow candles out a lot more frequently then other ghosts. I recommend placing a crucifix next to the candles and wait for the Ghost to blow them out together.
18. The Twins. The Twins are fun and tricky. They can do multiple interactions at the same time. As an example lets say one Twin is in the ghost room and Other is in the Garage. The ghost room has a EMF while your teammate hears something in the Garage. Now you can believe your teammate or you can look at the Activity Monitor in the Van and see a noticeable uneven line on the monitor (i recommend Googling “Twins Activity Board”) During a Hunt there are 2 speeds The ghost can have each based on The Twin. Each Twin has different speeds. One is SLOWER while the other is FASTER. The twins will never be average speed. Its random on which Twin you’ll get per hunt.
19. Raiju. I love this ghost because of how simple it is. Raiju’s will always get faster when Electricity is on. They are average speed until they get in a radius of electricity. If you have a motion sensor and they get close to it then they will get faster.
20. Obake. Obakes will always have FORCED Ultraviolet. Just place salt down or listen for Door touches and if you dont see Ultraviolet then its likely not Obake. Obake will always RARLEY leave a 6 finger hand print. And 2 finger Lights Switch print. Now The Obake during a hunt WILL ALWAYS shape shift. What this means is that you can see it psychically change its Ghost Model once during a hunt. Theres a chance it can do it multiple times.
21. The Mimic will Mimic what other ghosts do; however they always have Ghost Orbs show
22. Moroi has forced spirit box. They’re faster the lower your avg Sanity
23. Deogen Really fast then slow. FORCED SPIRIT BOX. you cant hide from them
24. Thaye’s Fast, but then gets slow due time/age Thaye’s Age once you get near it. Thaye is the fastest Ghost until they age..
