Introduction
Note: I’m Dutch, so I had to find this information on the internet and cannot guarantee that everything is accurate. Also, my usage of words like “drawer”, “cupboard”, “wardrobe”, etc. might be wrong at times. I hope the walkthrough is clear, but feel free to point out where I could use a better term.
Controls
Jump – Space
Crouch – Ctrl
Use lighter – Z
Open inventory – Tab
Scroll through inventory – Middle mouse button
Pick up and drop items – Right mouse button
Use keys – Right mouse button on locked object
Note: You can’t save manually, the game will safe by itself after certain checkpoints. The checkpoints will occur after each part of this walkthrough. There are also controls like F for flashlight, G for glowstick, and T for torch, but the game will just say you don’t have those items equipped (and as far as I know, they don’t exist in the game).
Part 1
Beginning
You start in a bedroom in a Soviet apartment building. Walk to the desk and pick up the lighter (you can use it with Z). A text will explain that you woke up restless, quoting the short story ‘The Portrait’, written by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol in 1834. Walk through the living room and hallway to the kitchen, where a piece of paper lies on the counter. It explains that a “houseboy” will punish you if you annoy him, and examples of things that annoy him are alcohol and tobacco smoke. Go back to the bedroom and pick up the bottle of beer from the desk. Take it to the hallway and throw it in the blue trash bin (it looks like a bucket) near the front door. Go back to the bedroom again, pick up some lighter fluid from the wardrobe, and pick up a vodka mug from the vault. Throw this in the blue trash bin in the hallway as well. Lastly, pick up the ashtray from the living room (on the arm of the lazy chair) and throw it in the trash bin. Now the front door will be unlocked. For some extra lighter fluid, enter the door of apartment 93 on this floor and check on top of the drawers.
Cleaning up Apartment 90
Go down the stairs one floor and enter the apartment with the open door. Another piece of paper will be on the dresser, explaining a houseboy can steal things like keys to play with them. If you want them back, you should fix things that annoy the houseboy, a.k.a. clean up again. Go into the bedroom in this apartment, where you will see the key that mysteriously disappears. Pick up the trashbag, go to the kitchen and throw the bag in the trash bin around the corner. On the counter, there is another piece of paper explaining how old and broken things and papers lying around annoys the houseboy as well. There is a trashbag in the apartment behind the hole in the wall in the kitchen, and another blue trashbag in the hallway of apartment 90. You can also find an ashtray on the counter in the kitchen, and an empty jerrycan in the corner behind the dressers in the bedroom. Pick up all of these things and throw them in the trash bin in the kitchen. Now, in the bedroom, the door to a wardrobe/dresser will be opened and you can find the key on the middle plank.
A warm place (apartment 94)
The key you found is to apartment 94, so go back upstairs and use the key on the door of number 94. Go to the bedroom in this apartment and open the wardrobe/dresser on the right to find a piece of paper. It explains that the “brownie” (the houseboy) prefers warm places. Pick up the lighter fluid from the desk here. Then go downstairs, into apartment 92, and pick up the cushion there. Bring it back upstairs to apartment 94, and put it between the dressers and the tricycle in the hallway (where you should be able to see a kind of blue outline of the cushion). Now you can open the vault in the bedroom and find the key to apartment 86.
Decorate a Box (apartment 86)
Apartment 86 is two stairs down, so go there and open the door with the key. On a dresser in the bedroom of this apartment, you can find a note explaining how the houseboy likes it when you give it a box that’s decorated with things like buttons and coins. On the same dresser there is a box ready to decorate. In the left closet in this room you can find a little chicken, so put that in the box. There is another one on the desk, as well as some lighter fluid. In the kitchen, you can find a stacking toy on the counter, and a kind of face on a stick on the table. Put all of these items in the box, then the vault in the kitchen will open with another key.
Part 2
Go down the stairs twice, and pick up some lighter fluid on the way (on the desk in apartment 84). Open the door to apartment 77 with the key. On a dresser around the corner, there will be some more lighter fluid. There is some rubble here, you can walk/jump on it and then crouch to get in the other room. You can find another piece of paper there on the dresser, which explains that houseboys can influence your livestock, and it especially likes horses. Go through the front door and around it to see a hallway without a door, which leads to apartment 47. Inside, you will find a horse toy (on a drawer, or next to it, on the floor). Pick it up, take it back to where you found the piece of paper (apartment 48), and place it where you see a blue outline of a horse (on the dresser with the piece of paper you found earlier). Now the door to apartment 46 will be open.
Beads (apartment 43)
Go into apartment 46. On the desk in the bedroom, you can find the key to apartment 43. Go down the stairs and into the hallway to open the door to apartment 43. On a dresser, you will find a box and another piece of paper (which is a little more difficult to pick up, try grabbing the lower left corner of the paper) that says houseboys like beads. Pick up the lighter fluid in the cupboard to the right, as well as a key from the same shelf. Take the necklace from the counter and put it in the box so the front door will open (since the houseboy locked it after you entered).
Brownies
Use the key you found on the shelves in apartment 43 to open apartment 41, and pick up the piece of paper around the corner. It explains that you can leave something sweet in the kitchen to appease the houseboy. You can find a brownie in apartment 44 (on the drawer), apartment 42 (on the desk in the bedroom) and apartment 40 downstairs (also on the drawer). Put these three brownies on the plate in apartment 41 to open the vault next to the couch, where you will find another key.
Knives (apartment 39)
Go downstairs and use the key on apartment 39. Find the note on the counter that says that the houseboy dislikes conflicts, meaning the knives in the room. Pick up the knife from the counter and throw it in the blue trash bin to the right. Do this with the knife on top of the suitcase next to the couch as well. Finally, take the knife from the scales on the floor on the other side of the couch and throw it in the trash. Now you can open the vault in this room and find a piece of paper, explaining the houseboy likes to play, along with a cubic toy and a key.
Keys
Take the cube with you and use the key to open apartment 38. You can place the cube on the desk in the bedroom and pick up some lighter fluid from the dresser. Now you can find two keys in the vault in the kitchen, one to open this apartment (because the houseboy locked it), and one for apartment 36. Go downstairs into apartment 36 to find another key on the cupboard. It says it’s the key to apartment 36, but you can use it to unlock apartment 33.
Part 3
If you go to apartment 35, but not inside, and walk through the hole in the wall, you can find more lighter fluid on the desk in the bedroom there. Then use the key that seems to be for apartment 36 on apartment 33, and go through the hole in the wall. You will find a key, lighter fluid, and a piece of paper on the table that explains that putting shiny things on the threshold of the house will mean prosperity. Turn around (while standing at the table) and find a medal on the floor (it looks white because it’s turned over). Put it on the tray on the cupboard in this room. Go back through the hole in the wall and find another two medals on the floor (one next to the couch, one next to the glass, closer to the fridge). Alternatively, one medal could be in the corner of apartment 33, next to the hole in the wall, and the other one in the windowframe near the table where you found the piece of paper. Either way, put the three medals on the tray in the apartment behind the hole in the wall. Now you can exit through this apartment’s front door.
Remote Control (apartment 2)
Now use the key on apartment 2 to find a piece of paper in the kitchen. It says the houseboy likes to have the remote control for the TV to play with the residents. Go into the bedroom where you can find a key on the desk, lighter fluid on a drawer next to the bed, and another key inside the cupboard against the same wall as the door to the other bedroom. Go inside the other bedroom and open the wardrobe with the key you just picked up (make sure you select the right key). (In this other bedroom, it’s possible to climb into the nextdoor apartment, but I don’t advise it because you won’t be able to get out and have to reload.) Take the remote control from the wardrobe you just opened and bring it to the desk in the previous bedroom. (After picking up the remote control, you can’t walk past the wardrobe door, so either put the remote control on the ground to close it, or jump over the bed, but don’t put the remote control on the bed, because it will fall through the duvet and you’ll have to reload). Now you can exit this apartment again (since up til now the door was locked by the houseboy again).
Ending
Go up the stairs and use the key on apartment 5 to get inside. You’ll find another piece of paper on the cupboard that says that you should bring the broom if you move to a new place, so the good houseboy will move with you. Pick up the broom twice (with either the left or right mouse button) to take it with you as you move to a new place, as well as your new friend! (When you get the text about the houseboy leaving with you, you should close your game manually, as nothing happens from this point.)
