If you’re a fan of Half-Life: Opposing Force and want to enhance your gaming experience, look no further. In this article, we’ll be listing add-ons that fix, tweak, and improve the game without making big changes. Keep reading to discover new ways to enjoy Half-Life: Opposing Force.
Introduction
This is another compilation of add-ons that fix up and improve the game in small but meaningful ways, this time for Half-Life: Opposing Force. Links and credits included!
I’ve tested all add-ons myself and ensured that they work together. If an add-on doesn’t work with another add-on, it will be made clear on the list.
All add-ons were sourced come from either ModDB or GameBanana.
By no means am I trying to take credit for these modders’ work. I’m simply attempting to put their work more out there so that others can enjoy it too 🙂
If you don’t know how to install add-ons, there’s a section in my Half-Life guide attempting to explain the process. Just know that instead of “valve_addon”, Opposing Force add-ons should be installed to a seperate “gearbox_addon” folder.
Start-Up and Main Menu
[gamebanana.com]
Re-implements both the Sierra startup MOV and Gearbox startup MOV, as well as bringing the Valve MOV over to Opposing Force.
Note: You need to install the contents of this add-on into the gearbox folder, not your gearbox_addon folder, otherwise the video will not play.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Adds “Planet”, the song that plays at the credits, to the main menu.
Note: This will play on top of the Gearbox Intro’s audio if you have that installed.
[gamebanana.com]
When Half-Life was updated for the 25th anniversary of the series, Valve remade the main menu. The text effects and organization of the new menu carried across to the expansion packs, and it made Opposing Force’s menu pretty bad looking.
This is the only widescreen menu add-on I could find that worked well with the HL25 update. It also restores the original WON menu’s text, somewhat.
Note: You can fix the typos by editing the very bottom lines of gameui_english.txt.
Fixes and Touch-Ups
[gamebanana.com]
Fixes the images in the multiplayer model selection menu so that they actually respond to changing the colors.
Even if you installed this for Half-Life, you also need to install it for Opposing Force.
Additionally, there is a patch by Mystyle48 [gamebanana.com] for this mod that adds the zombie playermodel exclusive to Opposing Force.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Replaces a line in the chapter Incoming with a slightly longer version from the press demo.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Restores the Black Ops Grunt death sound from the original release of Opposing Force, which is the same as the Barney death sound.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Fixes those horrendously loud boxes in Worlds Collide. They’re still loud, but they’re no longer ear-destroying.
This add-on also fixes the Alien Forces music track. Normally, it cuts off at the level transition. Now it will play on the final map with the Geneworm, ensuring that the whole song plays.
Consistency
[gamebanana.com]
Makes Adrian’s viewmodel gloves black instead of dark green to match the other H.E.C.U. soldiers.
[gamebanana.com]
Makes all instances of military backpacks on NPCs consistent in their design.
[gamebanana.com]
Changes the morning skyboxes and lighting of Welcome to Black Mesa / “We Are Pulling Out” to match Surface Tension’s daytime skyboxes from Half-Life.
In vanilla, WtBM and “WAPO” take place in the morning, which doesn’t line up with Surface Tension’s daytime. Since Adrian hears and sees the other end of the “Give us targets or get below,” transmission, these chapters should also be set at daytime.
Note: This add-on does somewhat change the mood of those maps, which you may or may not jive with.
[gamebanana.com]
This add-on gives Gordon the Long Jump Module when you see him in the Lambda Complex reactor core.
[gamebanana.com]
Changes Gina Cross’ corpse’s H.E.V. suit to be the tan that it is in Half-Life: Decay.
Consistency with Half-Life 2
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Adds the sprinting system and H.E.V. suit zoom function from Half-Life 2 to Half-Life. It also works with the expansion packs!
Note: For this to work, put game.cfg in “valve”. Yes, valve. It should carry over to other directories once you install it.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Replaces the Headcrab chomp sound with the bite sound from Half-Life 2.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Replaces zombie sounds with modified Half-Life 2 zombie sounds.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Replaces Barnacle sounds with their Half-Life 2 counter-parts.
(See GameBanana page for demonstration.)
[gamebanana.com]
Replaces Vortigaunt sounds with the Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, and Black Mesa sounds.
[gamebanana.com]
Removes the two side eyes from the Vortigaunts’ faces, which are not present in Half-Life 2.
