This guide will walk you through the process of unlocking Dark Souls Remastered’s Platinum Trophy – “The Dark Soul” from start to finish. By the end you will have 100% completion of the game.It provides achievement breakdowns, a thorough walkthrough, and tools to help you track your progress.
Introduction
Dark Souls Remastered is a game that will challenge the player’s endurance, skill and perseverance. Its Platinum Trophy can be considered the game’s ultimate test.
Obtaining this highly sought-after achievement will see you play through the base game, upgrade your character, collect many overworld items, and traverse every corner of Lordran. Expect to spend around 70-90 hours completing this Platinum, and know that it will be a gruelling test of ability and mental fortitude.
“So, what do you say? Why not help one another on this lonely journey?”
-Solaire, Knight of Astora
I should preface this section with the fact that this guide contains major spoilers for the story, ending, and lore of Dark Souls 1.
This guide is split into two segments, a description section and a walkthrough. The description will contain all of the information needed to obtain the Platinum Trophy, while the walkthrough will take you through all steps required in order in an easy-to-follow manner. Due to several achievements requiring progress to be made in New Game + level 1-3, you will need to completely finish the game twice at minimum and progress partially through a third playthrough in order to unlock all achievements.
This requirement can be bypassed by using item duplication glitches to obtain multiple boss souls which I personally do not condone, but if you are looking to attain this trophy in the least time possible this may be a convenient method for you to learn. As I do not support this method, I will not be providing further information on it, but should you wish to learn more, tutorials are widely available on the internet.
If you are prepared to take the first step towards mastering Dark Souls Remastered, let us begin.
Overview
Dark Souls: Remastered contains a total of 41 achievements, including its Platinum Trophy.
There achievements are not missable, and are unlocked during your first playthrough of the game’s main story.
These achievements are unlocked by beating various story bosses, namely some of the early game bosses and the four Lord Soul bosses required to end the game.
These achievements are bestowed from upgrading weapons to their maximum level within the relevant upgrade path.
These achievements are obtained by unlocking various endings based on the players’ actions in the main storyline.
This refers to four unique achievements which will require the player to collect various items from enemies, bosses, and merchants.
Story Achievements
This achievement is usually the first unlocked by players, and is received when initially lighting a bonfire. This includes those in the tutorial area, Undead Asylum.
Another very early achievement, this will be unlocked by interacting with the near-hollow Knight Oscar of Astora in Undead Asylum, who in his dying throes grants you this reusable healing item.
This achievement is unlocked when the player is lifted by a crow out of the tutorial area and into Firelink Shrine, the first overworld area and main hub of the game.
This achievement is unlocked once the player has defeated the Bell Gargoyles in Undead Parish and climbed up the ladder in the bell tower immediately after the boss arena. Atop the second ladder is a lever that can be activated in order to ring this Bell of Awakening.
This achievement is unlocked once the player has defeated Chaos Witch Quelaag in Quelaag’s Domain, an area connected to Blighttown’s infamous poison swamp. Upon defeating the boss, the player can progress forwards to an area housing a lever, which when activated will ring this Bell of Awakening.
This achievement is automatically granted to the player after defeating the Iron Golem at Sen’s Fortress and interacting with the golden glowing orb in the centre of the arena it was fought within.
Signifying one of the most key progressions in the game, this achievement is bestowed along with the Lordvessel by Gwynevere, Princess of Sunlight after the player defeats Ornstein and Smough in the heart of Anor Londo.
Another critical progression achievement, this will allow the player to kindle bonfires beyond the default limit of 1 time. It is unlocked upon defeating Pinwheel in the Catacombs, directly before the Tomb of the Giants. Unlocking this achievement will allow the player to store up to 20 Estus Flasks (given a kindling level of 3) up from the previous 10.
This achievement is required in order to fight the Four Kings, and is granted to the player upon defeating Great Grey Wolf Sif. It bequeaths the player a ring which allows for traversal of the Abyss, a pitch-black area beneath New Londo Ruins that would otherwise instantly kill the player should they make the mistake of falling into it.
Covenants
Covenants in Dark Souls serve multiple functions such as unlocking new equipment, enhancing PvP encounters, enabling unique item purchases and more. To unlock their achievements, the player does not need to actually join the covenant, merely selecting the ‘Covenant’ option with the host, which brings up the options to accept or reject their offer, is enough.
Most covenants enable co-operation between members, who are more likely to see eachother’s Summon Signs than they otherwise would be to see a non-aligned player’s Summon Sign.
This covenant is likely to be the first you encounter, and can be unlocked when first arriving in Lordran. The Cleric Petrus of Thorolund, located in the upper section of Firelink Shrine, offers the player the option to join this covenant. The only known effect of this covenant is to reduce the number of hostile invasions the player might receive while in Human form.
This covenant is available immediately after the player has defeated Ornstein and Smough, and can be accessed by speaking with Gwenyvere, Princess of Sunlight. Joining rewards the player with the Ring of the Sun Princess, as well as the enabling the use of the Bountiful Sunlight and Soothing Sunlight miracles.
Note: Dark Sun Gwyndolin and Sunlight Princess Gwynevere must both be alive in order to join this covenant.
This covenant is available to players who have equipped the Darkmoon Seance Ring, and can be considered a PvP based covenant. The player may join the Darkmoon Blades by interacting with Gwyndolin, the Dark Sun, in lower Anor Londo. Gwyndolin can be found by turning the staircase turnstile mechanism counter-clockwise from its middle position.
The covenant offers players unique PvP mechanics, particularly to do with Sin. Darkmoon Blade members can freely invade other players who have a recorded Sin using the Blue Eye Orb, earning Souvenirs of Reprisal for each successful invasion. Upon presenting Gwyndolin with 10 Souvenirs of Reprisal, they will bestow the Darkmoon Blade miracle and the Darkmoon Talisman as a reward.
This Faith-based covenant can be joined by interacting with fan-favourite character Solaire of Astora at the Sunlight Altar in Undead Parish. It requires 25 Faith to join, but this requirement is reduced by 5 for each successful instance of co-operation in which the player helps another to defeat a boss. After 5 successful co-operations, the Faith requirement is removed.
The covenant offers several rewards to members which will be required to obtain the Platinum Trophy, including the Lightning Spear, Great Lightning Spear, and Sunlight Spear miracles. These Miracles cannot entirely be obtained without completing the main storyline at least once, as the player will need to present Solaire with 10 Sunlight Medals and the Soul of Gwyn in order to unlock them.
The Forest Hunter covenant is a niche PvP-oriented covenant that can be unlocked by speaking with Alvina of the Darkroot Woods. It rewards players the Cat Covenant Ring upon joining, an item which allows players to punish others who have trespassed into the Darkroot Garden or Basin.
This effectively places the player into a queue to invade the first player who enters either of these areas and meets the player’s Soul Level bracket. It also unlocks the ability to purchase several weapons and unique armor sets from Shiva of the East.
Note: This covenant can not be unlocked if the player has placed the Lordvessel at Firelink Shrine.
This unique covenant is primarily used to unlock Dark Souls’ hidden ending, The Dark Lord. After obtaining the Lordvessel, the player must not place it in Firelink Shrine with Frampt; instead they will need to speak with Ingward in the New Londo Ruins then defeat the Four Kings before speaking with Darkstalker Kaathe to be given the option to join.
The covenant guarantees the reward of the Dark Hand, a weapon required for the Knight’s Honor achievement.
This PvP-oriented covenant allows the player to invade others who have Dragon Scales in their possession. It can unlocked at the end of Ash Lake, the hidden area adjoined to Blighttown Swamp by the Great Hollow.
Cutting off the tail of the Everlasting Dragon, who offers the player the option to join the covenant, is a requirement for the Knight’s Honor achievement, and will not aggro the dragon nor prevent the player from joining the covenant.
Note: Gravelord Nito must be alive in order to join this covenant.
This unique, heavily PvP-oriented covenant can be joined by interacting with Gravelord Nito in The Catacombs. The player must interact with a coffin near the Titanite Demon in the lower portion of the Catacombs. It is recommended due to the specificity of this location that you look up a guide on how to get to this location before attempting to join the covenant.
It unlocks a mechanic called Gravelording, which will spawn Black Phantom versions of overworld enemies across a random selection of other players’ worlds, who will be prompted to invade the Gravelord Servant in order to undo this effect. This currently only affects players who are New Game +, but players in their first playthrough are also able to invade the Gravelord Servant.
Presenting Gravelord Nito with 10 Eyes of Death, collected by successfully invading players as a Gravelord Servant or farmed from Basilisks, is a requirement for both the Knight’s Honor and Prayer of a Maiden achievement, as it will unlock the Gravelord Sword weapon as well as the Gravelord Sword Dance and Gravelord Greatsword Dance Miracles.
This covenant can be unlocked by interacting with Quelaag’s Sister, sometimes known as the Daughter of Chaos or the Fair Lady, at the end of Blighttown Swamp after Quelaag’s boss arena. It grants the player powerful Pyromancies in exchange for Humanity, first of which being the Great Chaos Fireball Pyromancy.
It is a requirement for the Bond of a Pyromancer achievement that the player present the Fair Lady with 30 Humanity in order to unlock the Chaos Storm Pyromancy.
Bosses
For detailed strategy guides on fighting each boss, please see my Dark Souls Remastered Boss Guide.
Nito, First of the Dead, possesses one of the four Lord Souls required to ascend the Lordvessel. He is located at the very end of the Tomb of the Giants, and upon defeat will grant this trophy to the player.
The Bed of Chaos possesses yet another of the four Lord Souls. It is the origin of all Demons within Lordran, and was born of the corruption of the legendary Witch of Izalith. Located at the endpoint of Lost Izalith, this boss is an atypical “puzzle boss” and bestows this achievement upon the player when defeated.
Another Lord Soul is possessed by the Four Kings, who so impressed Lord Gwyn that he bestowed unto them a part of his own Soul. This boss fight involves 4 identical entities, who can spawn alonside oneanother if not dealt with hastily. Upon defeat, this achievement is granted to the player.
Seath the Scaleless, who famously betrayed his own kin in a vain search for immortality, possesses the final Lord Soul. He is located in the depths of the Crystal Caves, a cavernous region littered with sprawling invisible pathways and ice crags. Defeating Seath will reward the player with this achievement.
The first optional/missable boss on this list, Dark Sun Gwyndolin is a fierce devotee to the teachings of their father Gwyn, and the final deity that remains in the once-prosperous city of Anor Londo. The encounter can be treacherous, as they will flee from the player with quick teleports and punish slow reactions with volleys of high-damage magical and projectile attacks. Defeating Gwyndolin is a requisite for the player to unlock this trophy.
Another missable boss is Crossbreed Priscilla, also known as Priscilla, the Half-Dragon. A being whose power level intimidated even the most powerful beings of ancient Lordran, Priscilla was banished to the Painted World of Ariamis due to the threat of her Lifehunt ability. In order to unlock this region, the player must requisition the Perculiar Doll from revisiting Undead Asylum. Defeating Priscilla will unlock this achievement.
Weapon Upgrades
These achievements are unlocked by upgrading weapons using various upgrade paths. They will require a non-unique weapon (a weapon not requiring Twinkling Titanite to upgrade) and the relevant Titanite shards, chunks and slabs for each upgrade path.
The Titanite required to unlock this achievement is:
Titanite Shards, Large Titanite Shards, and Green Titanite Shards, can be purchased from Andre of Astora (Normal Only), Anor Londo’s Giant Blacksmith (Normal, Large, Green), and Hawkeye Gough (Large, Green) respectively. The total cost to purchase these materials from the vendors is 422,200 Souls.
This diagram shows an overview of all weapon upgrade paths and their requirements. Note that certain upgrades can be reverted in order to save on Titanite costs (for example, a Chaos +5 weapon can be reverted to a Fire +5 weapon) using the Modify Equipment option at a Blacksmith.
The achievements for this section are as follows:
Acquire best weapon through standard reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Crystal reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Lightning reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Raw reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Magic reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Enchanted reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Divine reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Occult reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Fire reinforcement.
Acquire best weapon through Chaos reinforcement.
Wisdom of a Sage
“The knowledge here is limitless. I will absorb it, then share it with you.”
-Big Hat Logan
This achievement can be obtained in your first playthrough. It is recommended, however, to wait until New Game+ so that you have a surplus of souls to purchase all required sorceries, as grinding for souls in New Game can be tedious.
This achievement progress tracker[jadepilled.github.io] (originally created by smcnabb and modified by me) may be useful to help you keep track of this achievement.
The total Soul requirement to purchase all sorceries, assuming none have been purchased, is 208,500 Souls.
Bond of a Pyromancer
“Pyromancy is the art of invoking and manipulating fire. But remember one thing. Always fear the flame, lest you be devoured by it, and lose yourself.”
-Quelana of Izalith
Bond of a Pyromancer, similar to Wisdom of a Sage, can be obtained in your first playthrough. For this achievement, there are two characters who will be critical to your progress. The first is Quelana of Izalith, a lone pyromancer encountered in Blighttown. The second is Laurentius of the Great Swamp, who must be rescued from the Depths.
This achievement progress tracker[jadepilled.github.io] (originally created by smcnabb and modified by me) may be useful to help you keep track of this achievement.
The total Soul requirement to purchase all Pyromancies, assuming none have been purchased, is 123,300 Souls. You should factor in that this will also require the player to have an additional 53,500 Souls to upgrade the Pyromancy Flame to +10, bringing the total cost to 176,600 Souls.
Prayer of a Maiden
“Would a Miracle be of any help to you? I would be most pleased if that were so. May we discuss Miracles, then?”
-Reah of Thorolund
Prayer of a Maiden, unlike the Pyromancy and Sorcery collection achievements, necessitates you finish the game at least once, as it requires the player to give the Soul of Gwyn to the Warriors of Sunlight Covenant in order to unlock.
This achievement progress tracker[jadepilled.github.io] (originally created by smcnabb and modified by me) may be useful to help you keep track of this achievement.
Assuming the player purchases Miracles from the merchants offering the lowest price, the total Soul cost to unlock all Miracles is 71,500 Souls.
Reah: 1,000
Reah: 2,000
Patches: 10,000
Reah: 1,000
Patches: 5,000
Reah: 1,000
Reah: 500
Knight’s Honor – Overview
“The nice thing about weapons…they never betray you. So pay them a little respect, eh?”
-Andre of Astora
Knight’s Honor is widely considered the most difficult achievement in the game to unlock. It requires multiples of several boss souls, with the limiting soul being that of Sif, the Great Grey Wolf. It will also require you to farm multiple enemies for chance-based drops.
This achievement progress tracker[jadepilled.github.io] (originally created by smcnabb and modified by me) may be useful to help you keep track of this achievement.
In order to unlock this achievement, multiple upgraded weapons will be required to obtain their ascended boss variants.
- +10 Katana
- +10 Shield or Buckler x2
- +10 Bow
- +10 Cestus or Claw
- +10 Spear or Rapier x2
- +10 Axe
- +10 Dagger, Sword or Greatsword x2
- +10 Broken straightsword
- +10 Halberd, Scythe or Whip
- +10 Curved Sword
- +10 Hammer or Great Hammer
The titanite requirements to upgrade these weapons to +10 are
- Titanite Shard x126
- Large Titanite Shard x126
Purchasing these materials is an effective way to cut down the time required to farm them. If the player chooses to purchase Titanite Shards from Andre of Astora and Large Titanite shards from Anor Londo’s Giant Blacksmith, the total Soul cost to prepare all weapons for ascension is 579,600 Souls.
It is recommended due to the low drop rates of some weapons required to unlock this achievement that the player stay as close to the maximum of 410 item discovery as possible while farming. The following items and mechanics affect item discovery and should be used when farming for drops from overworld enemies.
This Ring, obtained in Sen’s Fortress, boosts the player’s item discovery.
The player’s Humanity level increases item discovery rate, with the maximum item discovery unlocked at +10 Humanity. It does not make a difference whether or not the player is hollow, as long as they have 10 Humanity displayed in the top left.
The Symbol of Avarice, a guaranteed drop from the player’s final Mimic Chest, provides an alternative to the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring, and does not stack with it. It notably does cause a slow but constant drain on the players’ health.
Knight’s Honor – Boss Weapons
To obtain boss weapons, the player must bring 5,000 souls, as well as the upgraded weapon and boss soul required for ascension, to the Giant Blacksmith in Anor Londo.
This achievement progress tracker[jadepilled.github.io] (originally created by smcnabb and modified by me) may be useful to help you keep track of this achievement.
Knight’s Honor – Overworld Weapons
These weapons are obtained through enemy drops, covenant rewards, or found throughout Lordran.
This achievement progress tracker[jadepilled.github.io] (originally created by smcnabb and modified by me) may be useful to help you keep track of this achievement.
Endings
Both of the endings are exclusive, meaning that only one of these achievements can be unlocked per playthrough.
This can be considered the canon ending to Dark Souls. It is unlocked by default when the player places the Lordvessel at Firelink Shrine, as instructed by Kingseeker Frampt.
This alternative ending sees the player ally with Darkstalker Kaathe instead of Frampt, and requires the player to defeat the Four Kings and place the Lordvessel in the Abyss instead of at Firelink Shrine. Both endings will need to be completed in order to unlock their trophies and the Darkwraith Covenant achievement.
Walkthrough: Starting Out
Foreword: This walkthrough should not be considered a “completionist” walkthrough, as it does not provide instructions to get every single weapon, upgrade material, or item, only those required to obtain all achievements.
There are 4 achievement trackers that can be useful to keep an eye on your progress for the Knight’s Honor[jadepilled.github.io], Prayer of a Maiden[jadepilled.github.io], Wisdom of a Sage[jadepilled.github.io], and Bond of a Pyromancer[jadepilled.github.io] achievements.
Don’t kill NPCs.
A good philosophy is if an NPC is not hostile, don’t kill them. Though you might be tempted to punish Petrus or Patches for their condescending tone, you will lose access to their wares as a result, and may soft-lock yourself from obtaining achievement-critical items. An exception to this is Lautrec. Always kill Lautrec. All my homies hate Lautrec.
Never use Boss Souls for anything but weapon ascension.
Tempting as it might be to gain some souls immediately, this will punish you in the long run and can potentially extend your playthrough by entire New Game+ cycles if you waste a critical Soul.
You only have one chance for “Tail” weapons per playthrough.
See the Knight’s Honor – Boss Weapons section for more information. You only have one shot per boss fight to obtain that boss’ tail weapon.
Quests are important.
The questlines for Big Hat Logan, Laurentius, Siegmeyer, and Rhea are critical to complete and should be done whenever possible.
After saving Laurentius from the Depths, your dialogue matters.
If you answer “Yes” to him when he enquires about your pyromancies, he will travel to Blighttown and go hollow, attacking you on sight. It is recommended to answer “No” to him, upgrade your Pyromancy Flame to +10 as soon as possible, and purchase all unowned pyromancies from him and Quelana.
Don’t kill Gwyndolin before levelling Darkmoon Blade covenant.
Doing so locks you out of unlocking the Darkmoon Blade Miracle, which can be unlocked by presenting Gwyndolin with 10 Souvenirs of Reprisal.
Don’t kill Nito before levelling Gravelord Servant covenant.
Doing so locks you out of unlocking the Gravelord Sword weapon as well as the Gravelord Sword Dance and Gravelord Greatsword Dance miracles. These require the player to present Gravelord Nito with 10 Eyes of Death.
Your actions after receiving the Lordvessel determine the game’s ending.
If it is placed at Firelink Shrine’s lower section by speaking with Frampt, you will be locked into the ‘To Link the Fire’ ending. Alternatively, if the player ignores Frampt and instead defeats the Four Kings immediately after, they will have the option to unlock the ‘The Dark Lord’ ending instead. Both of these will be required to obtain DS1’s platinum.
Dusk of Oolacile’s Sorceries should be purchased before accessing the DLC.
Killing the Golden Crystal Golem in the Duke’s Archives locks you out of purchasing items from Dusk of Oolacile, as having the Pendent in your possession will automatically cause her to move to the end of the DLC, causing Elizabeth to sell her items in Oolacile Sanctuary instead.

Walkthrough: New Game +
By this point, you have completed your first playthrough of Dark Souls, and should have around 33-37 Achievements. Well done!
For the most part you can play through just the main storyline of the game normally, but be sure to select the ending that you did not use the first playthrough. For instance, if you placed the Lordvessel at Firelink Shrine in your first playthrough, this time you should place it at the Abyss after defeating the Four Kings to unlock the other ending. Missing this step will lock you into another New Game + cycle, so make sure that you play accordingly!
- Optionally give the Soul of Gwyn to Solaire to receive the Sunlight Spear miracle and the Prayer of a Maiden achievement.
- Defeat Chaos Witch Quelaag to obtain her Soul and ascend it to whichever weapon you have not already acquired.
- Defeat the Moonlight Butterfly and Great Grey Wolf Sif, and ascend their Souls to whichever weapons you have not already acquired.
- Defeat the Iron Golem to obtain its Soul and ascend it to whichever weapon you have not already acquired.
- Defeat Ornstein and Smough in the opposite order that you originally did. For instance, if you ended up killing Smough first in your initial playthrough, this time kill Ornstein. This will allow you to collect both of their Souls.
- Defeat Dark Sun Gwyndolin to obtain their Soul and ascend it to whichever weapon you have not already acquired.
- Defeat Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, and ascend his Soul to obtain either of the Great Lord Greatsword or Sunlight Spear Miracle you have not already acquired.
- Complete as much of the Knight’s Honor achievement as you can. You should only require the Soul of Sif in your third playthrough.
- Optionally farm for souls and materials to get any achievements you might have missed.
- Ensure that you have purchased all possible sorceries, pyromancies and miracles before progressing into New Game +2.
Walkthrough: New Game +2
By your 2nd playthrough you should have obtained either 39 or 40 of the game’s achievements, and you are very close to completion.
Your only remaining task is to defeat Great Grey Wolf Sif and ascend her Soul to the final remaining weapon.
- Defeat the Bell Gargoyles and ring the Bell of Awakening.
- Defeat Chaos Witch Quelaag and ring the second Bell of Awakening.
- Defeat Great Grey Wolf Sif to receive her Soul.
- Defeat the Iron Golem to progress into Anor Londo.
- Ascend your final boss weapon to the Greatsword, Cursed Greatsword, or Greatshield of Artorias to finally unlock the Knight’s Honor achievement.
