A brief guide on the key moves with timings.
Introduction
The moves I’ll address are:
- Crazy Dash
- Crazy Stop
- Crazy Drift
- Limiter Cut
There are other moves, but they aren’t as important. For more detail on all Crazy Taxi moves, visit the excellent full guide at http://www.crazytaxi.net/skills.html.
Crazy Dash
1. Release accelerator -> then immediately
2. Switch into drive (D) -> then immediately
3. Accelerate
It doesn’t matter if you’re switching from reverse or already in drive. You can buffer this to happen while the animation of a passenger is entering or leaving the car is happening too – just wait for their feet to leave the ground if they’re getting in, or them to start jumping out of the car if getting out.
Each step should happen instantly after the last, but not at the same time as the last. In other words, there has to be a minuscule delay between releasing the accelerator, hitting drive, and accelerating again. Turn the game’s sound effects up, and you’ll here the engine go into an overdrive sound.
This move lasts only briefly, but mastering it is the key to all the rest. Get into 10 min arcade and practice before you move on.
Crazy Stop
So it’s:
1. Reverse (R)
2. Brake
This move will help you stop much more quickly. This and Crazy Dash are the best for braking to zero and accelerating from zero, respectively.
Crazy Drift
There are two variants. Crazy Drift and Crazy Braking Drift. Crazy Drift goes like:
While accelerating or at full speed going straight forward:
1. Continue accelerating
2. Reverse (R)
3. Drive (D)
4. Turn Hard in either direction
This timing is very quick, with almost no gap between each action. The braking drift is the same, with one extra step.
While accelerating or at full speed going straight forward:
1. Shift from accelerating to braking
2. Reverse (R)
3. Drive (D)
4. Turn Hard in either direction
This variant will bring you to a sideways stop. It’s also necessary for that Crazy Box one with the grannies, in which you’ll start the Crazy Braking Drift as you cross the crosswalk.
Note: In Crazy Box stage 1-S, to get all the strikes, you need to be doing the non-braking variant of the Crazy Drift when you hit the front bowling pin of each triangle – you should be almost sideways when you hit. This seems to guarantee a strike in most cases.
Limiter Cut
The steps are:
- Release accelerator
- Reverse (R)
- Wait 0.5 seconds or so
and then execute the Crazy Dash:
- Drive
- Accelerate
The waiting 0.5 seconds after reverse is the most important. Everything else should happen with a similar timing to Crazy Dash – as a reminder, that means each action should happen immediately after the last, but not at the same time as it.
I’ll write out the timings in full for extra help:
1. Release accelerator -> then immediately
2. Reverse (R)
*wait 0.5 seconds*
3. Drive -> then immediately
4. Accelerate
For the duration of the 0.5 second wait, this guide to Crazy Box S-S from FamilyTeamGaming really helped me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFIamZVa_4Q
I spent the whole video listening to the timing of the Reverse -> Drive shift, and then launched the game and practised in 10min original.
You’ll know you succeeded because the engine will sound even more overdrive-y than with the Crazy Dash, and it will last a lot longer. Turn off music to be sure you’re getting it right.
Note: The waiting 0.5 seconds is actually a fairly lenient timing window – you can wait a little longer or a little less and it’ll still work. What isn’t lenient in my experience is that you can’t wait too long during the Crazy Dash portion of the move – accelerator has to happen very quickly after hitting drive.
Conclusion
I hope this guide proves useful. These are the timings that worked for me, but there seems to be conflicting information online, so maybe these won’t work for you.
For example, the timings in the guide I linked in the introduction seemed off for me, but maybe they’ll work for you if mine don’t. The descriptions of the moves are much more detailed in that guide however, so I’d recommend checking it out in addition to this one.
All the best, good luck with the 100% if that’s what you’re aiming for, or enjoy the epic game that is the original Crazy Taxi if not!
