What do these two vehicles have in common? In Service since 1972 – The BTR-70 is an eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier originally developed by the Soviet Union during the late 1960s under the manufacturing code GAZ-4905.In Service since 1962 – The BRDM-2 is an amphibious armoured scout car designed and developed in the Soviet Union. It was intended to replace the older BRDM-1, and has improved amphibious capabilities and better armament compared to its predecessor. Mainarmament14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun Secondaryarmament7.62 mm PKT coaxial general-purpose machine gun Exactly ! They use the same Guns/Tower. The armament is the same as on the BTR-60PB armored personnel carrier; a KPVT heavy machine gun with a coaxial 7.62 mm PKT all-purpose machine gun as a secondary weapon, both in a small conical BPU-1 turret mounted on the hull in a central position above the belly wheels. BPU-1 turret is the name of this tower. And as you have read, this turret was used in some vehicles. The BTR-70 and the BRDM-2 each have : 7 boxes of PKMT 7.62 x 54 mm ammunition with 250 rounds each in the store and 1 box in the weapon. That makes a total of 8 x 250 = 2000 rounds
BPU-1 Turret
The turret makes it possible to raise the armament between -5 and +30 degrees.
Depends very much on the terrain. Opponents standing upright in front of the vehicle are easy to fight. This changes quickly if they are lying down and therefore come into the blind spot.
We have conducted several experiments – on flat GROUND – and you can see the results here. It is frightening – and shows what the Soviets had to find out in the Afghanistan conflict – and what was one of the reasons – why a BTR-70 was very quickly taken out – and replaced by the BTR-80. All in all, the 70 was a misconstruction.
On the left side of the turret there is an air inlet on the top of the hull. There are also two air intake louvers in the front part of the engine compartment roof and four smaller air intake louvers in the rear. Both sides have centrally positioned sight blocks.
The vehicle armor, which is made of welded steel, is sufficient against small arms and small shell fragments, but not enough to protect against large artillery fragments or .50 caliber machine gun fire, which can penetrate the BRDM-2’s maximum 14 mm armor.
NOTE : The further away I am from my destination – the better. The BTR-70 is also not an IFV ! it is purely for transportation ! Its an APC ! Battles with the BTR-70 quickly end in death. Never go into battle without infantry support. Infantry cover their blind spot.
HERE – we see infantry that WE can no longer fight. Communication with your driver is important!
KPVT 14,5 x 114 mm
The picture shows the weapon system.
Here you can see the magazine, which holds 50 rounds per box.
9 boxes of KPVT 14.5 x 114 mm ammunition with 50 rounds each in the store and 1 box in the weapon. This makes a total of 10 x 50 = 500 rounds. This number is the same for BRDM-2 and BTR-70. THIS IS A STANDARD VALUE! Of course, more ammunition can be carried or removed.
