Suggestions for Controls and Settings
Settings can be accessed through the “Options” button on the game’s main menu.
I highly recommend playing this game with Mouse and Keyboard. Most achievements require a level of precision that may be hard to reach with a controller.
Video:
- Field of View can be set to 120 from a baseline of 100. This setting makes it easier to identify nearby threats and environmental hazards.
- Screen shake can be enabled or disabled. Disabling screen shake can reduce the chaos of gameplay.
- The User Interface can be made smaller. This setting functionally shrinks the game’s screen. This adjustment may be useful on large screens.
- The game’s HUD can be shrunk or expanded. Boomerang X has a very non-intrusive HUD by default, but shrinking its size may open up the bottom of the screen when it gets crowded with skill notifiers.
Audio:
- Master volume, music volume, and sound effect volume can be adjusted to preference. Sound effects are often important, but Boomerang X does a good job of remaining playable without audio.
Controls:
- Lock-on can be enabled or disabled. This setting redirects the cursor’s aim directly towards a nearby target. Lock-on has a significant effect on gameplay and should be toggled on or off based on personal preference. I cannot recommend enabling lock-on, as it may make retreating from threats more difficult.
- Hold to Use Flux can be enabled or disabled. Flux is a mechanic that can be used to slow down the environment, giving players more time to aim and evaluate their surroundings. Similarly, Flux can be made to occur automatically with the “Flux on by Default” setting. These settings have a significant effect on gameplay and should toggled based on personal preference.
- Keybindings depend largely on personal preference. Side-mouse key binds are enabled for Boomerang X.
Gameplay:
- Danger Warnings should be enabled. An eerie sound effect and dark border surround the screen when an enemy is nearby.
- Speedrun timers can be enabled to help with time-based achievements. The upper timer represents individual-level time while the lower timer represents time spent in a playthrough.
- Play Intro Cutscene can be disabled to make the game begin a little quicker. This cutscene tends to drag on for a while and can be very boring to watch. This cutscene does not affect spent in-game.
- Gameplay Extras are additional game modes that can be enabled for a unique experience. These settings DO interfere with many achievements and should never be enabled while achievement hunting. One achievement (Which will be discussed later) requires the scattershot gameplay extra to be enabled.
Accessibility:
- Most accessibility options should be used based on personal necessity.
- Enabling “Extra-Visible Required Enemies” and changing “Required Enemy Color” are both very useful ways to make targets more identifiable. I would recommend making required enemies either pink or purple. Pink is an environmental color most often used in the early game. Purple is highly visible in most maps leading up to The Resonance Engine. Colors that should generally be avoided are dark blue, light blue, red, and orange. Light Blue is hard to spot in Atsil’s Quarry, dark blue is hard to spot in The Resonance Engine, and orange and red are hard to spot in late-game lava-based levels. Green may also be hard to spot in the Poisoned Well and Incursion of the Great Worm, but won’t cause many issues beyond the early-mid game.
Natural-Level Achievements
Natural level achievements will be unlocked once their associated levels have been completed. All waves must be eradicated for a level to be marked as complete. Natural-level achievements will unlock a few seconds after the final enemy is defeated. Natural-level achievements cannot be missed.
Some notes to keep in mind are that every level’s final wave is its most involved wave, requiring multiple strong enemies to be killed.
The penultimate wave of a level usually features simple encounters and is typically a good time to charge active skills.
While progressing levels, several skills will be unlocked to make level progression easier.
- Sling is unlocked after the composer’s garden.
- Flux is unlocked after Kenak, the Exiled Tyrant.
- Scatter Shot is unlocked after the Grudge Pit.
- Needle is unlocked after The Poisoned Well.
- Blaze is unlocked after Atsil’s Quarry.
- Oblivion Comet is unlocked after The Grave of the Yoran Legion.
Boomerang X: This is the most widely-held achievement in the game. Boomerang X can be achieved a few seconds after beginning the game by moving from the beach, into a small straw settlement, and through a supply room.
- The X boomerang is in the center of this room and will automatically be picked up when approached. Shields are obtained in the same manner. This achievement should unlock as soon as the X boomerang is equipped.
Composer’s Garden: First active level. This level has 6 waves. You must kill spiders and flies.
Kenak, the Exiled Tyrant: Second active level. This level has 7 waves. You must kill spiders, flies, and jellyfish.
The Grudge Pit: Third active level. This level has 8 waves. You must kill spiders, flies, jellyfish, and jellyfish spawners.
- Jellyfish spawners introduce the “weak point” mechanic and will die only after the shield on their backs has been destroyed.
The Valley of the First Nymphs: Fourth active level. This level has 7 waves. You must kill spiders, jellyfish, jellyfish spawners, and tires.
- Tires are very fast and can catch you off guard. They should be given a high priority. Starting on the fifth wave, two tires will spawn per wave instead of only one.
- If you are not airborne, use Scattershot or Needle to take them out easily.
Yoranwood: Fifth active level. This level has 5 waves. You must kill spiders, jellyfish, jellyfish spawners, and llamas.
- Be careful around llamas (Yes, they have horns, but I’m still calling them llamas). Llamas have 5 weak points. One weak point is above each of this enemy’s legs while the remaining weak point is at the top of its head. Llamas possess one of the most dangerous attacks in the game, bisecting the map into two parts through the use of a storm. Lightning will strike areas around you before the storm ends. This lightning will temporarily stun you if it makes contact. Llamas will begin using their storm attack from the moment they spawn.
- Llamas can be dealt with in two easy ways outside of direct targeting: Either use Scattershot to take out two weak points on their sides or activate Blaze and land on their backs to take out four weak points at a time. Make a habit out of blasting weak points on their heads whenever you find yourself above the storm.
The Poisoned Well: Sixth active level. This level has 7 waves. You must kill barracudas, jellyfish, jellyfish spawners, shield bugs, and frogs.
- Barracudas are fast ground enemies who will approach you in a weaving pattern.
- Shield bugs are small flying enemies who generate a protective bubble around nearby required targets. Shield bugs defend predetermined targets. A shield bug’s target enemy can be killed before the shield bug places a barrier around it. You will often benefit from killing their targets early.
- Frogs are large enemies with two weak points and two attacks. One of a frog’s weak points is on its back while the other is on its stomach. A frog’s stomach weak point is obscured while the frog is grounded. Frogs begin with an acid belch, which has a damaging continuous area of effect that lasts for a few seconds. After a frog belches, it jumps. While jumping, a frog’s stomach weak point becomes visible.
- Frogs are somewhat high-priority targets with fairly disruptive moves. A frog can be killed quickly either with Scattershot (when it is preparing to belch), Needle, or Blaze. Needle is the best way to kill frogs, as it can penetrate both weak points immediately.
The Incursion of the Great Worm: Seventh active level. This level has 6 waves. You must kill barracudas, jellyfish, jellyfish spawners, shield bugs, acid bubbles, acid bubble spawners, and giant moths.
- Acid bubbles are small, floating enemies that move slowly. Acid bubbles are easily identifiable from other enemies. There will usually be a large cluster of central acid bubbles if you strafe around the map. Acid bubbles cause a damaging area of effect when they die, and should never be dashed through (Believe me, this cost me a no-damage run during the Resonance Engine).
- 90% of the time acid bubbles are more helpful than harmful because of their ability to charge up skills.
- Acid bubble spawners teleport away when you or your boomerang comes too close to them. A smoke trail will lead to their new location. These enemies can be annoying to kill with direct targeting but Needle can kill them before they teleport.
- Giant moths spawn with 4 or more shield bugs (in the form of smaller moths) behind them. Every shield bug must be killed to make the moth vulnerable. Moths fly in a circle around the map and have one attack. Moths create a large, damaging pillar of light. This attack can be evaded with relative consistency by simply backing away.
- Moths can be dealt with quickly if a Scattershot is used to defeat all or most of the shield bugs guarding them. After their shield is down, moths have one large weak point on their backs.
Natural-Level Achievements 2
The Old Vein: Eighth active level. This level has 6 waves. You must kill leeches, shield bugs, acid bubbles, acid bubble spawners, and eyeballs.
- Leeches are small, flying enemies who can be used to charge skills. Leeches have an attack where they congregate to discharge a small damaging area of effect.
- Eyeballs are one of the most dangerous enemy types in the game and should be treated as priority targets. Eyeballs are small, airborne targets with one attack. Eyeballs will shift their position when you are nearby and charge up and fire a laser once distance has been established. This laser will follow your position. Eyeballs will enter a temporary stunned state after being attacked directly. They have a weak point on their back.
- Eyeballs can be killed with a single Needle. Alternatively, eyeballs can be stunned with Scattershot (even while protected by a shield bug). Eyeballs can also be killed by a well-timed boomerang recall.
Atsil’s Quarry: Ninth active level. This level has 7 waves. You must kill leeches, shield bugs, acid bubbles, acid bubble spawners, eyeballs, large sawblades, and small sawblades.
- Small sawblades are similar to tires, with the primary difference being their ability to fly. Small sawblades are very aggressive and should be killed immediately. This can be accomplished easily with Scattershot or direct targeting.
- Large sawblades have four weak points and feature no attacks outside of moving up and down. Large sawblades pose very little threat and should not require the use of any skills to defeat. Large sawblades can be weakened with Scattershot or killed with Blaze to save time.
Hall of the Ersatz Feast: Tenth active level. This level has 8 waves. You must kill spiders, leeches, jellyfish, large jellyfish, jellyfish spawners, shield bugs, small sawblades, and frogs.
- Do not be afraid to use Scattershot often in this stage. I have found success in using Scattershot at the beginning of every wave. Plenty of enemies spawn to recharge Scattershot. Scattershot also serves as a fast way to wipe out any incoming small sawblades.
Grave of the Yoran Legiont: Eleventh active level. This level has 7 waves. You must kill jellyfish, large jellyfish, jellyfish spawners, flaming jellyfish, flaming jellyfish spawners, eyeballs, shield bugs, small sawblades, and wyverns.
- Flaming jellyfish and their spawners function very similarly to jellyfish and jellyfish spawners with the addition of more speed.
- While many maps include terrain hazards on the ground, this level includes large pillars of fire that cause contact damage.
- Wyverns are fast-flying enemies introduced in this level. Wyverns have two attacks and three weak points. Wyverns will fly towards you at a relatively high speed while projecting a breath attack from their mouths. This attack is similar to the frog’s belch but covers a significantly shorter distance. After pursuing for a few seconds, wyverns will turn around, and position themselves towards the center of the map before attempting their pursuit once more. One weak point is on their back while the remaining two are on their tail.
- As far as larger enemies go, wyverns are not very durable. While being pursued, wyverns can be defeated with high consistency through the use of any skill. Scattershot and Blaze will always kill a wyvern while Needle and direct attacks can kill wyverns in their pursuit phase. Wyvern tails don’t cause collision, meaning the boomerang can sweep through a wyvern’s tail weak points.
The Resonance Engine: Twelfth active level. This level has 7 waves. You must kill flies, jellyfish, large jellyfish, jellyfish spawners, flaming jellyfish, flaming jellyfish spawners, acid bubbles, acid bubble spawners, eyeballs, shield bugs, small sawblades, llamas, moths, and wyverns.
- The Resonance Engine serves as a final skill check before the final boss. This map contains no new enemies but features the largest variety of enemies, as well as several large and threatening enemies.
- The Resonance Engine is the largest map in the game. This can be beneficial, as it gives you plenty of room to strafe around the map, eliminating threats only as they come closer. High-priority targets do, however, tend to spawn farther away than they would elsewhere in the game.
- Completing this map is a long and tedious process where plenty of things could go wrong. Do not be afraid of taking your time on your first clear.
*This next section contains spoilers for the final level of Boomerang X*
Vashkatar: Final active level. This level has 5 waves. You must kill Vashkatar, the final boss, Crystals spawned by Vashkatar, Vashkatar’s heart, and possibly lightning jellyfish.
- Vashkatar is an incredibly unorthodox encounter, featuring three waves where you must attack Vashkatar’s weak points, and two waves where you must attack Vashkatar’s heart.
- When attacking Vashkatar’s main body, you need to destroy several weak points as Vashkatar emerges from the fog. These weak points take the form of large bands around Vashkatar’s torso and summon homing crystals when destroyed. These homing crystals can be used to charge several skills, as they tend to bunch themselves into groups. You should always keep Blaze active during one of Vashkatar’s main-body phases
- Body phases are followed by heart phases. Vashkatar will spit his heart into the center of the arena. His heart will branch out into several weak points. While his heart is active, lightning jellyfish will be spawned periodically. Vashkatar’s heart will open up to display a final weak point once all surrounding weak points have been destroyed. Heart phases can be skipped entirely if Scattershot is used on the heart before weak points begin emerging.
- Vashkatar’s body weak points will gain shields after the first heart phase has been completed. These weak points are temporary but may recharge if given time. Vashkatar’s third body phase stops using shields but increases its speed significantly.
- Be sure not to fly too close to the arena’s edges, as the entire battlefield is covered in a damaging storm. Vashkatar’s weak points may still be targeted through this storm, making Needle a valuable skill.
Timed-Level Achievements
Timed level achievements require you to complete levels within a listed time frame. Timed level achievements will unlock a few seconds after their associated levels are completed so long as any time requirements have been met.
Most time-saving tactics are detailed in Natural Level Achievements (1 and 2). Waves and enemies remain the same with every attempt, though their spawns may vary.
You should complete the game before attempting any timed levels to have access to all of your skills. This is not required, but will likely be helpful.
Don’t worry too much about your health while attempting a timed level. Quickly defeating a difficult threat is more important than a shield.
Red Means Go: Clear Kenak, the Exiled Tyrant within two minutes.
Pit Champion: Clear The Grudge Pit within two minutes.
Record Harvest: Clear The Valley of the First Nymphs within two minutes.
War on Wood: Clear Yoranwood within two minutes. This achievement is the first major timed-level hurdle. Use Blaze or Scattershot to destroy multiple weak points on Llamas. Do not forget about Jellyfish Spawners on the wooden tree paths.
Leap Frog: Clear The Poisoned Well within two minutes. Kill the frog before shield bugs spawn around it on the final wave.
Early Bird: Clear Incursion of the Great Worm within two minutes. Use Scattershot on the Moth’s personal shield bugs. Use Needle (as necessary) on Acid Bubble Spawners.
Cold Blooded: Clear The Old Vein within three minutes. Use Needle on the Eyeballs.
Speedskating: Clear Atsil’s Quarry within three minutes. Of every achievement in the game, this is one of the hardest. Not only does Atsil’s Quarry feature numerous long and complex waves, but a lot of time can be wasted dealing with Acid Bubble Spawners toward the end. Use Scattershot on the small sawblades and try to have Needle ready as often as possible.
Running on Coals: Clear Hall of the Ersatz Feast within three minutes. Scattershot is a valuable tool for killing jellyfish and small saw blades.
Hot Streak: Clear Grave of the Yoran Legion within three minutes. Kill wyverns with Scattershot whenever possible, as this is the most consistent way to destroy all of their shields.
Root Rush: Clear The Resonance Engine within seven minutes. Kill high-priority targets such as Llamas, Wyverns, and Eyeballs whenever they show up. There is a higher risk of death at this stage than there is at any other, but the given completion time is very generous.
*This next section contains spoilers for the final level of Boomerang X
Fastkatar: Clear Vashkatar within three minutes. Use Scattershot to skip heart phases as well as Needle to expedite body phases.
No-Flux Level Achievements
Much like timed level achievements, no-Flux level achievements are completed when levels are cleared under a certain set of conditions. In this case, you may not use Flux at any point throughout a level. These achievements should unlock a few seconds after the final enemy is killed in a level where Flux was not used.
The easiest way to complete no-Flux level achievements is simply by removing the keybind for Flux in your game settings and beginning a new run. This setting is found in “Controls”.
You may find yourself frequently needing to defeat enemies with the use of skills. Take your time, try remaining airborne in larger levels, and anticipate missed attacks.
No Time for Grudges: Clear The Grudge Pit without using Flux.
No Time Nymphs: Clear Valley of the First Nymphs without using Flux.
No Time for Woods: Clear Yoranwood without using Flux.
No Time for Poison: Clear The Poisoned Well without using Flux.
No Time for Worms: Clear Incursion of the Great Worm without using Flux.
No Time for Veins: Clear The Old Vein without using Flux.
No Time for Atsil: Clear Atsil’s Quarry without using Flux.
No Time for Feasts: Clear Hall of the Ersatz Feast without using Flux.
No Time for Legions: Clear Grave of the Yoran Legion without using Flux.
No Time for Resonance: Clear The Resonance Engine without using Flux.
*This section contains spoilers for the final level in Boomerang X.
No Time for Vashkatar: Clear Vashkatar without using Flux.
Single-Playthrough Achievements
Single-playthrough achievements must be obtained in a single run starting from the Entaccan Coast and progressing through the final level. Most of these achievements do not require a new save file. This means you can complete the game, unlock every skill, unlock every shield boost, and play through the game again after selecting the Entaccan Coast in the start menu.
Though this has already been mentioned, disabling the opening cutscene in your game settings can make the process of attempting these achievements slightly less tedious.
Many Legged Friend: This achievement requires you to speak with Tepan at least three times in every location he spawns. Once the dialogue is exhausted, you will be met with a short, repeating line of dialogue.
This achievement must be completed in a single playthrough without exiting the run. If you have already spoken to Tepan in an existing save file, you will need to create a new save. The achievement will unlock after Tepan’s dialogue has been exhausted in his final spawn location.
Tepan spawns (in order) at the following locations:
- Tepan’s first spawns in The Shrine of the Kaspidae following The Grudge Pit.
- Tepan’s second spawn is in The Shrine of Cursed Blood following Yoranwood.
- Tepan’s third spawn is in the Forum of the Lost Hive following the Incursion of the Great Worm.
- Tepan’s fourth encounter is in The Hermit’s Bath following Atsil’s Quarry.
- Tepan’s fifth and final location is in The Deepest Folly following The Grave of the Yoran Legion.
Mach X (left) and Mach Infinity (right): Both of these achievements are similar and can be obtained in the same run. Mach X requires you to complete a full playthrough within an hour, and Mach Infinity requires you to complete a full playthrough within 45 minutes.
Most of your time will be spent completing individual levels. Here are some general strategies that may be helpful:
- Jump and Sling are extremely important mobility tools. In the early game, jumping consistently can move you between levels very quickly. After Sling is unlocked, most overworld sections can be dashed through. The Shrine of Kaspidae, for example, can be flown through with a single use of Sling.
- Do not waste time speaking with Tepan or collecting every shield if you don’t have to. Shields are important but can be skipped to save a few seconds.
- Memorize the usual spawn patterns of enemies. Doing this will help you prioritize threatening targets as soon as they spawn while saving some time dealing with shield bugs.
- Strive to complete every level within 15 seconds of their listed clear time (If the time achievement for a level is 2 minutes, try completing it within 2 minutes and 15 seconds). Going overtime on one or two levels is fine, but try to complete levels as fast as possible.
- Finally, do not die. Though this should seem fairly self-explanatory, dying wastes time.
These achievements will unlock after the game credits conclude.
X Machina: To unlock X Machina, you must complete the game in a single playthrough without taking any damage from any source. X Machina is one of, if not the hardest achievements to get and will likely take multiple attempts to complete.
In addition to following the advice listed in the Natural-Level Achievements sections, there is a list of strategies you can employ to maximize your chances of unlocking the achievement.
- Make sure you are prepared before you start. Take the time to complete every difficult level one or two times before going through a full attempt. Boomerang X gives you plenty of opportunities to practice individual sections.
- Always keep Blaze active. Blaze is a strong support tool to stop you from accidentally losing a shield and should be active as often as possible. Unless fighting waves of grounded enemies, prioritize regaining Blaze the moment it is lost. If you need to kill scattered flies and jellyfish to regain Blaze, do it.
- Establish a list of priority targets. While these may change depending on how much difficulty you experience with each one, make sure you know which enemies to take out and when to kill them. Small sawblades and eyeballs should be killed as soon as possible, with wyverns and llamas following suit.
- Keep yourself moving. Loop around the arena until you find a threat-free opening to make progress. Enemies will only hit you if you’re stagnant or frequently flying into the fray.
- Look out for environmental hazards. Pillars of lava in the Grave of the Yoran Legion, the pool of lava following the Grave of the Yoran Legion, lava at the bottom of Atsil’s Quarry, and the void at the bottom of The Resonance Engine, as well as the storm in Vashkatar are all common places to take damage.
- Take your time. Use as much of your Flux as possible when deciding upon a strategy of attack. There is no time limit, so spend as much time on any wave as necessary to safely progress.
This achievement will unlock after the game credits conclude.
Endless Mode Achievements
Endless Mode is an optional game mode available from the moment you begin playing the game. It is advised to complete the main game before attempting endless mode, as doing so may help you better understand the game’s mechanics.
The Endless Mode menu features several diverse game modes that can be selected and played. These game modes include the following:
- Standard, with all shields and skills available.
- Hardcore, with no shields or skills aside from Sling and Flux.
- Passionfruit, with no shields but all skills enabled.
- Cantaloupe, with five shields and without Scattershot or Oblivion Comet mode.
- Plum, with three shields and no abilities aside from Sling, Flux, and Scattershot.
- Custom, with options to customize shield and skill load-outs (custom mode can be used whenever it is not specified to be disabled).
If you are unable to select or play anything in Endless Mode, this is because the Endless Mode Menu defaults to touch-screen controls. If you play Boomerang X on a device with touch-screen capabilities, you can navigate the menu manually by pressing the screen with your finger or a stylus.
Endless Mode is a game mode contained entirely within the Red Garden map. This map only appears in endless mode. You must progress through an endless number of waves while playing endless mode. Waves are not progressed by killing marked enemies as they are in the main game. Progression in endless mode can be made whenever enemies are killed. A new wave will begin after a certain quantity or variety of enemies have been killed.
Endless Mode features point mechanics including a point-tallying system and kill streaks to multiply score. Points are earned whenever enemies are killed. Kill streak builds up as points are obtained. To keep kill streak active, you need to kill an enemy within a certain amount of time. An audio notifier signals when a kill streak is about to expire. Kill streak continues to count down as it normally would while Flux is active, meaning Flux does not slow down its expiration.
After a kill streak of four is reached, special enemies will spawn (colored green by default) that boost your kill streak up to 10 for a short period.
Moth Feel: Kill a giant moth in the Passionfruit category. To get this achievement you must begin an endless mode run in the passionfruit category and survive until wave 23. At this wave, a giant moth will spawn with 4 shield bugs protecting it. The achievement will unlock once the giant moth is killed.
- The most difficult aspect of this achievement, as is the case with most endless mode achievements, is getting to the required (wave 23). This process normally takes about 7-10 minutes.
- Wheel enemies will begin to spawn around wave 8, making the ground incredibly unsafe.
- Llamas will spawn during waves 9 and 16.
- The lava pillar environmental hazard begins on wave 16.
- Eyeballs spawn during wave 18.
- Kill streak is irrelevant in gaining this achievement, so try not to worry about it.
Fruit Salad: Play one round of every non-custom endless game mode. This achievement is very easy and straightforward. Begin a round in every game mode and intentionally die to a spider once you begin (exiting may be possible for this achievement as well, but I hadn’t tried doing so).
Fast Casual: Get a x10 multiplier in any endless mode category. As stated in the opening of this section, a x10 kill streak multiplier will be achievable once special enemies are killed after kill streak x4 has been held for a considerable amount of time.
- Do not underestimate this achievement, as it is much simpler in description than in practice. Standard mode or Custom mode are the easiest modes in which this achievement can be obtained. Completing this achievement can easily take 10+ minutes.
- Keep your kill streak going by any means necessary and re-obtain it quickly if it ever gets dropped. This means that you should always keep a small and simple enemy (like a jellyfish) nearby whenever you begin targeting enemies who may have multiple weak points or may take a while to kill.
- Target your Needle towards faraway enemy crowds to replenish it while maintaining a kill streak.
- Progress waves quickly by targeting jellyfish spawners and wheels when they spawn early into a run.
Antipasto: Obtain 1500 points in the Hardcore category. This achievement will unlock once a kill streak of at least 1500 is locked in by the end of a run.
- Because Hardcore mode vastly limits your offensive and defensive options, you need to ensure your survival while maintaining a long kill streak. Similarly to fast casual, you must ensure your kill streak drops as few times as possible. This achievement can take longer to complete than Moth Feel depending on how often kill streaks are dropped.
- You will not have access to Blaze while attempting this achievement, meaning it is much more dangerous to rush through crowds. Similarly, having no shields means that you will be especially vulnerable to large and fast attacks such as the storms generated by llamas.
Air Fryer: Survive two minutes while the floor is covered in lava in any endless mode category. The floor will visibly be covered in lava at the beginning of wave 60. After wave 60 begins, you will need to survive for two minutes. This achievement will be unlocked once you have survived two minutes. Enabling timers may help you gain a bearing on the time it takes to complete this achievement.
- This achievement can be completed in Custom or Standard mode. Similarly to Moth feel, the most difficult part of this achievement is making it to wave 60. Doing this may take over 30 minutes.
- Once lava covers the floor, eliminate all dangerous targets (llamas). Kill any enemies that stray too close, but do not actively approach them.
- Use Sling to strafe along the side of the map. Change direction occasionally to avoid large pockets of newly spawning enemies (I wouldn’t recommend this tactic anywhere else in the game).
- Use Oblivion Comet frequently beyond wave 40. Oblivion Comet may be dangerous as it shifts your placement, but a few seconds of invulnerability may preserve your shields or buy time if you can avoid finishing near the map’s border.
Non-Categorized Achievements
Killcount Achievements: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Midnight Snack are four similar achievements that will naturally build up as the game is played. These achievements, in order, require you to kill 100 enemies, 1,000 enemies, 2,500 enemies, and 10,000 enemies. Other achievements should be prioritized over these, as every other achievement will make progress towards these. If you manage to complete every achievement aside from the kill count achievements, they can always be completed in levels that spawn large numbers of enemies like The Resonance Engine, Hall of the Ersatz Feast, or the Valley of the First Nymphs.
Backstabber: Kill five enemies with one boomerang recall. The easiest ways to obtain this achievement are by recalling a boomerang through five bubbles or leeches while airborne or five spiders or barracudas while grounded. This can be completed easily during most levels but may be particularly easy in the Valley of the First Nymphs, Yoranwood, The Old Vein, or the Resonance Engine.
Dogfighter: Get 50 consecutive kills without touching the ground. Unlock Blaze before attempting this achievement as doing so will grant you an airborne kill counter. This achievement can be unlocked in levels with few to no grounded enemy spawns such as the Grave of the Yoran Legion or the Resonance Engine.
Flight Simulator: Travel 200 miles in the air. Progress towards this achievement builds up over time as you move through the air.
Hula Hoop: Kill 10 enemies while the boomerang orbits you. Once thrown, the x boomerang will attempt to return to you. To stop the boomerang from returning, you need to jump in a circular motion while directing your course away from the boomerang. An easy way to unlock this achievement is by entering the Hall of the Ersatz Feast, progressing to a wave featuring several jellyfish spawners, killing every large jellyfish, and grouping both jellyfish and spiders until at least 10 are present. After this, have the boomerang orbit you and jump through the enemy group whenever your boomerang is far enough away to continue its orbit.
You can take damage while the boomerang orbits you. You can also use the Scattershot skill notifier to count how many enemies were killed during orbit. If you attempt this achievement outside of the Hall of the Ersatz Feast, make sure you use jellyfish as your primary source of kills.
Sewing Machine: Chain five Needle shots in a row. Needle will feed another charge of itself when it is used to kill multiple enemies. Separate abilities cannot be used to kill enemies while chaining Needle. To complete this achievement easily, enter the Resonance Engine and progress until you find a stage with several bubble and jellyfish spawners. Hover around the edge of the map while allowing bubbles and jellyfish to spawn. Bunch remaining enemies into a group, and use needle to pierce through them at different angles. The fifth needle shot does not need to kill any enemies.
The Floor is Lava: Beat a level without touching the ground. While attempting this achievement, you must not touch the ground in a way that you can walk. An easy way of tracking progress on this achievement is by making sure your Blaze counter remains active through an entire level. Jump into the air before shattering any level’s opening crystal. This achievement is easiest completed in levels with little to no required ground-based targets, such as The Old Vein.
Not Quite My Tempo: Play several incorrect keys in the Tuning Court. This can be completed in any Tuning Court. The achievement will unlock once the Tuning Court is completed. To ensure you unlock the achievement, hit every string in the court.
Overkill: Use Oblivion Comet to kill a fly. Flies spawn in the Resonance Engine after you unlock Oblivion Comet, making it easy to complete in a single playthrough. Enter Oblivion Comet Mode and use the ability to kill a single fly, then let it time out. Killing multiple enemies interferes with the use of Oblivion Comet when attempting this achievement.
Scatterbrained: Complete a level using “Scattershot Only” mode. This mode can be activated in the “Extras” section of “Gameplay.” This mode disables all of your existing abilities outside of throwing the x boomerang and using Scattershot. Scattershot can be used endlessly. Simply enable this setting and complete any level.
Boomerang +: Once the final level of Boomerang X has been completed, you will be given the option to play again in an upscaled difficulty mode. This difficulty mode is called New Game + and is accessible from the “Save Select” screen. To unlock this achievement, you must complete New Game +.
- Levels in New Game + Feature different enemy spawns compared to their main-game counterparts. Lightning Jellyfish will begin appearing regularly. New types of leeches spawn with larger and faster hazardous effect areas. There is also a new variety of Eyeball with a faster tracking laser.
- New Game + Does not need to be completed in a single playthrough so long as it is 100% completed.
- Many early levels feature more distinctly aggressive enemies while still leaving you with a lower starting health, and may be more difficult than many later levels throughout New Game +.
- The Resonance Engine features a new environmental hazard, as black sludge seeps from the ceiling and functions similarly to lava pillars in the Grave of the Yoran Legion.
- Vashkatar is given several changes. His heart phase begins revealing weak points immediately, making it harder to completely skip. Vashkatar’s heart phase also summons lightning leeches and jellyfish while starting. Vashkatar’s default movement speed in New Game + is set to the same as his final movement speed during his original fight. Vashkatar’s final phases now include shields and spawns a series of bubble spawners. In addition to the changes applied to the Vashkatar Boss, his arena is altered to exclude a central platform.
