• Protontricks flatpak installed: Protontricks can be downloaded and installed via the Discover store in the desktop mode of your Steam Deck. : https://flathub.org/apps/com.github.Matoking.protontricks

• Install the game via Lutris, or your preferred launcher that can access winetricks, and run the game at least once to verify the install is working

This next section of the guide will walk you through how to use winetricks within Lutris if you’re a GOG user or how to use Proton tricks within Steam OS to make the same changes for an installed Steam version of the game. If you’ve installed the game via another service like Heroic, the steps are transferable; just access winetricks however you prefer.

• You will need to be in the Desktop Mode of your Steam Deck.
• From within the Lutris app, select the banner for 8 Bit Adventures 1 at the bottom of the screen. To the right of the ‘Play’ button is a wine icon and an arrow facing up. Click on the arrow.
• Select ‘Winetricks’ from the list of available options.

  

• Continue from the General section

• If you haven’t already, open the Discover app and search for Protontricks and install the application.

  

• Open Protontricks and select 8-Bit Adventures 1: The Forgotten Journey Remastered Edition from the list of installed games

  

  

• The guide will now follow along with the GOG install in the General section.

• Make sure ‘Select the default wineprefix’ is selected and click on the ‘OK’ button

  

• Make sure ‘Install a font’ is selected and click on the ‘OK’ button

  

• Select ‘corefonts’ from the list of options and click on the ‘OK’ button

  

• Fonts will now begin to install. Please note that this process isn’t user intuitive and it will look like the fonts are failing to install. Expect to see the below popup for the install of every font. Just click ‘OK’ to progress each time you are prompted.

  

• Eventually, the fonts will install and you will be returned to the general winetricks menu. Pick ‘Select the default wine prefix’.

  

• Select ‘Install a font’ and click on the ‘OK’ button

  

• You should now see some fonts have a checkbox next to them, confirming they are installed.

  

• Start 8-Bit Adventures either through Lutris or Steam depending on your install. Get into a battle and damage an enemy; you should now see damage numbers for your attacks.

  

The fix will restore damage numbers and any other text within the game that does not use the game’s custom pixel font but instead relies on a core font.
